4. Setup and Installation
Installation of the Monstrum Side Saddle is designed to be straightforward, utilizing existing pin holes on your shotgun receiver. No specialized gunsmithing is required.
Required Tools:
- Appropriate screwdriver or Allen wrench for included hardware.
- Gun oil or lubricant (recommended).
Installation Steps:
- Ensure Firearm is Unloaded: Always verify that your shotgun is completely unloaded and safe before beginning any installation or maintenance.
- Prepare Receiver: Identify the pin holes on the side of your shotgun receiver where the side saddle will attach.
- Apply Lubricant (Optional but Recommended): Apply a small amount of gun oil or lubricant to the bottom surface of the side saddle and the corresponding area on the shotgun receiver. This can help the saddle slide on smoothly and prevent minor scratches during installation.
- Align and Attach: Carefully align the side saddle with the pin holes on the receiver. Insert the provided screws through the side saddle and into the receiver pin holes. It may be necessary to push the main screw through the back of the shotgun to secure it.
- Tighten Hardware: Hand-tighten all screws initially. Once all screws are in place, gradually tighten them evenly until secure. Avoid over-tightening. Some users recommend applying a small amount of thread locker (e.g., Loctite) to the screws to prevent loosening from recoil.
- Function Check: After installation, cycle the shotgun's action several times to ensure there is no interference with the pump or ejection port. Verify that the side saddle is firmly attached and does not wobble.

5. Operating Instructions
Loading Shells:
- Grasp a 12-gauge shotgun shell.
- Insert the brass end of the shell into one of the shell retention loops on the side saddle.
- Push the shell firmly until it is fully seated and held securely by the elastic or rubberized loops. The shells should be held tightly to prevent accidental dislodgement.
Removing Shells:
- Grasp the desired shell firmly.
- Pull the shell directly away from the side saddle to release it from the retention loop.
Using the Optic Rail:
The integrated 13-slot Picatinny rail allows for the attachment of various optics and accessories. Ensure any mounted accessories are properly secured according to their individual instructions.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe down the side saddle with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt or debris. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the finish or shell retention material.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the side saddle for any signs of wear, damage, or loose hardware. Ensure the shell retention loops maintain their elasticity.
- Hardware Check: Regularly check the tightness of the mounting screws. Recoil can cause screws to loosen over time. Re-tighten as necessary.
- Removal for Cleaning: For thorough cleaning of the shotgun receiver, the side saddle can be removed by unscrewing the mounting hardware. Reinstall carefully following the setup instructions.
7. Troubleshooting
- Side Saddle is too tight during installation:
Apply gun oil or lubricant to the contact surfaces of the side saddle and receiver before sliding it into place. This can ease installation and prevent scratching. Ensure proper alignment with pin holes.
- Screws do not align or are difficult to install:
Ensure you have the correct model shotgun as per the compatibility section. Try installing the chamber screw first, then the other two, as suggested by some users. Do not force screws; verify alignment.
- Shells are not held securely or fall out:
Ensure shells are fully seated in the retention loops. If the loops have lost elasticity due to prolonged use or exposure to extreme conditions, the unit may need replacement. Verify you are using 12-gauge shells.
- Interference with pump action:
This indicates an incompatibility issue. The side saddle is not compatible with Mossberg models where the pump action extends past the receiver when fully cycled. Refer to the compatibility section.
- Mounting screws loosen over time:
Regularly check and re-tighten screws. Consider using a small amount of non-permanent thread locker on the screw threads during installation to help prevent loosening from recoil.
