Operating the Lens
Focusing
This lens supports both autofocus (AF) and manual focus (MF). The focus mode is typically controlled via the camera body settings.
- Autofocus: When the camera is set to AF, the lens will automatically focus on your subject. Utilize the camera's AF-area modes for optimal performance.
- Manual Focus: Switch the camera to MF mode. Rotate the focus ring on the lens to adjust focus manually. The lens features a smooth, precise focus ring for fine adjustments.

Vibration Reduction (VR)
The lens incorporates Nikon's advanced Vibration Reduction (VR) system, which helps to minimize blur caused by camera shake, especially when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds or with long focal lengths. The VR function is activated and controlled via the camera's menu settings.
- The VR system provides up to 6.0 stops of compensation when used with a camera supporting Synchro VR, and 5.5 stops with other Z series cameras.
- For optimal results, ensure VR is enabled when shooting handheld. Consider disabling it when using a sturdy tripod to avoid potential interference.
Customizable Controls
The NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S lens features several customizable controls for enhanced usability:
- L-Fn Buttons: Multiple L-Fn (Lens Function) buttons are strategically placed on the lens barrel. These can be assigned various functions via the camera's custom controls menu, such as AF Lock, subject tracking, image playback, or other frequently used settings.
- Control Ring: The control ring can be customized to adjust aperture, ISO sensitivity, or exposure compensation, providing quick access to key settings without taking your eye from the viewfinder.

Extending Focal Length
The effective focal length of the lens can be extended using compatible Nikon Z series teleconverters or by utilizing the camera's DX Crop Mode:
- NIKKOR Z TC 1.4x: Extends the focal length to 840mm.
- NIKKOR Z TC 2.0x: Extends the focal length to 1200mm.
- DX Crop Mode: When combined with the TC 2.0x, the DX Crop Mode can achieve an equivalent focal length of up to 1800mm.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Lens
To maintain optical performance, keep the lens elements clean. Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
Storage
When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in its provided lens case. Avoid storing the lens in direct sunlight, high humidity, or extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, consider a dry cabinet to prevent mold growth.
Handling Precautions
- Avoid exposing the lens to sudden temperature changes, which can cause condensation.
- Do not attempt to disassemble the lens. Repairs should only be performed by authorized Nikon service personnel.
- Protect the lens from strong impacts or vibrations.
