Setup

Before using your watch, ensure the time and date are correctly set.

Setting the Time

  1. Pull the crown out to position 2 (the outermost position). The second hand will stop.
  2. Rotate the crown to set the hour and minute hands to the correct time. Ensure you distinguish between AM and PM if your watch has a 24-hour indicator or if setting the date.
  3. Push the crown back into position 0 (normal operating position). The second hand will resume movement.

Setting the Date

  1. Pull the crown out to position 1 (the first click).
  2. Rotate the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise (depending on the movement) to set the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this can interfere with the date change mechanism.
  3. Once the date is set, push the crown back into position 0.

Operating the Chronograph

Your Bulova 96B409 features a chronograph function for measuring elapsed time.

Basic Chronograph Operation

  • Start: Press the upper pusher (button A) to start the chronograph. The chronograph second hand will begin to move.
  • Stop: Press the upper pusher (button A) again to stop the chronograph. The elapsed time will be indicated by the chronograph hands.
  • Reset: After stopping the chronograph, press the lower pusher (button B) to reset all chronograph hands to their zero positions.

Split Time Measurement (if applicable)

Some chronographs allow for split time measurement, enabling you to measure intermediate times without stopping the main timing.

  • Start: Press button A to start the chronograph.
  • Split: Press button B to measure a split time. The chronograph hands will stop, indicating the intermediate time, while the internal timing continues.
  • Release Split: Press button B again to release the split time. The chronograph hands will instantly catch up to the ongoing elapsed time.
  • Stop: Press button A to stop the chronograph.
  • Reset: Press button B to reset all chronograph hands to zero.

Maintenance

Proper care will help maintain the appearance and functionality of your Bulova watch.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the watch case and bracelet regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stainless steel, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry one. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Water Resistance: Your watch is water-resistant to 100 meters (10 ATM). This means it is suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet or submerged in water. Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperature changes, such as moving from a hot sauna directly into cold water, as this can compromise the seals.
  • Battery Replacement: As a quartz watch, it is powered by a battery. When the battery runs low, the second hand may start to jump in two-second intervals (End-of-Life indicator). Have the battery replaced by an authorized Bulova service center or a qualified watchmaker to ensure proper sealing and function.
  • Magnetic Fields: Avoid exposing your watch to strong magnetic fields, as this can affect the accuracy of the quartz movement.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your watch, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Watch Not Running:
    • Ensure the crown is fully pushed in to position 0.
    • If the watch has stopped completely, the battery may need replacement. Consult a professional watchmaker.
  • Chronograph Hands Not Resetting to Zero:

Quartz chronographs sometimes require calibration if the hands do not align to zero. This procedure typically involves pulling the crown to position 2 and using the pushers to adjust the chronograph hands. Refer to a detailed Bulova quartz chronograph manual or consult a service center for specific instructions for your model.

  • Date Not Changing:
    • Ensure the time is set correctly, distinguishing between AM and PM. The date typically changes around midnight.
    • Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM.
  • Water Inside the Watch:

If you notice condensation or water droplets inside the watch, seek professional service immediately. Do not attempt to open the watch yourself, as this can cause further damage and void the warranty.
