4. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your amplifier. Follow these steps carefully.

4.1 Mounting the Amplifier

  • Choose a secure, flat surface for mounting. The amplifier is designed for surface mount installation.
  • Ensure the mounting location allows for adequate air circulation around the amplifier's heatsink.
  • The amplifier dimensions are 7 x 4.5 x 2 inches (178 x 115 x 50 mm). Allow extra space for wiring connections.
  • Use appropriate hardware to securely fasten the amplifier to the chosen surface.

4.2 Wiring Connections

All wiring should be done with the vehicle's battery disconnected.

4.2.1 Power Connections

  • Power (B+): Connect an 8 AWG power wire directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery to the amplifier's B+ terminal. Install a fuse holder with an appropriate fuse (100 Amps recommended) within 18 inches of the battery.
  • Ground (GND): Connect an 8 AWG ground wire from the amplifier's GND terminal to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
  • Remote (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the amplifier's REM terminal. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.

4.2.2 Speaker Connections

  • Connect your speakers to the amplifier's speaker terminals using 16 AWG speaker wire.
  • Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for all speaker connections.
  • The SX4.1000 is a 4-channel amplifier. Refer to the specifications for minimum impedance loads (2 ohms stereo, 4 ohms bridged).

4.2.3 Signal Input Connections

  • RCA Input: If your head unit has RCA outputs, connect them to the amplifier's RCA input jacks.
  • High-Level Input: If your head unit does not have RCA outputs, use the high-level inputs. Connect the speaker outputs from your head unit directly to the amplifier's high-level input connector.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the amplifier is installed and wired, you can configure its settings for optimal audio performance.

5.1 Gain (Input Sensitivity) Adjustment

  • The amplifier has independent gain controls for CH1/CH2 and CH3/CH4.
  • Adjust the gain (SENS) control to match the output voltage of your head unit. The range is 0.4V to 10V for both RCA and High-Level inputs.
  • Start with the gain set to minimum. Play a familiar track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume.
  • Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear distortion, then back off slightly. The CLIP indicator LED will illuminate if the signal is clipping.

5.2 Crossover Adjustment

The SX4.1000 features 12dB/Oct high-pass (HPF) and low-pass (LPF) filters for each channel pair.

  • High Pass Filter (HPF): Used for full-range speakers or tweeters to block low frequencies. Adjustable from 50 Hz to 5 kHz.
  • Low Pass Filter (LPF): Used for subwoofers to block high frequencies. Adjustable from 5 Hz to 5 kHz.
  • Set the crossover points according to your speaker types and desired sound. For full-range speakers, a typical HPF setting might be 80-120 Hz. For subwoofers, an LPF setting around 80-100 Hz is common.

5.3 Indicator Lights

  • PWR (Power): Illuminates when the amplifier is powered on and operating normally.
  • PRO (Protection): Illuminates when the amplifier enters protection mode due to overheating, short circuit, or low voltage.
  • CLIP: Illuminates when the input signal is too high, causing distortion. Reduce the gain setting if this light is frequently on.

6. Maintenance

The DD Audio SX4.1000 amplifier requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Connections: Regularly check all power, ground, remote, and speaker connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's heatsink fins are free from obstructions to allow for proper heat dissipation.
