Figure 2.1: Wiring Diagram for PZEM-017. This diagram illustrates how to connect the DC Consumption Meter to a load, a shunt (50A, 100A, 200A, or 300A), and an RS485 to USB cable for PC communication. Note the warning regarding independent power supply when input test voltage is less than 7V.

Connection Steps:

  1. Connect the load to the meter as indicated in the diagram.
  2. Connect the appropriate current shunt (50A, 100A, 200A, or 300A) to the meter's shunt terminals. The shunt is essential for current measurement.
  3. For communication, connect an RS485 to USB cable to the RS485 port on the meter and to your PC.
  4. Important Power Supply Note: If the input test voltage is less than 7V, an independent 5V power supply must be used via the USB port. Do not use a PC's USB port for this independent power supply if the input voltage is below 7V, as it may damage the PC.

3. Operating Instructions

The PZEM-017 meter measures various DC electrical parameters. Once properly wired and powered, it can communicate data via its RS485 interface.

3.1 Data Measurement

The meter continuously measures and provides the following data:

  • Voltage: 0.05-300V DC
  • Current: 0.02-300A (depending on shunt used)
  • Active Power: 0.2-90kW
  • Energy Consumption: 0-9999kWh

3.2 Communication Protocol

The meter uses a UART to RS485 communication interface with a baud rate of 9600, 8 data bits, 2 stop bits, and no parity. The application layer utilizes the Modbus-RTU protocol, supporting function codes such as 0x03, 0x04, 0x06, 0x41, and 0x42.

For detailed register addresses and their resolutions, refer to the specifications section.

3.3 Alarm Functions

The device includes configurable over-voltage and low-voltage alarm thresholds. Default settings are 300V for high voltage and 7V for low voltage. These thresholds can be adjusted via the Modbus-RTU interface.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and accurate performance of your PZEM-017 meter, follow these general maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the device clean and free from dust and moisture. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the meter to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods. The recommended working temperature range is -20°C to 60°C.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and free from corrosion. Periodically check wiring for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Do not attempt to open the device casing, as this may void any applicable warranty and could expose you to electrical hazards.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PZEM-017 meter, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power/Display: Verify that the power supply is correctly connected and within the specified voltage range (0.05-300V). If the input test voltage is below 7V, ensure an independent 5V power supply is used via the USB port, as described in the Setup section.
  • Incorrect Readings: Check all wiring connections, especially to the shunt, for proper polarity and secure contact. Ensure the correct shunt rating is selected in your software configuration if applicable.
  • Communication Issues: Confirm the RS485 to USB cable is correctly connected. Verify the baud rate (9600), data bits (8), stop bits (2), and parity (none) settings in your communication software. Check the Modbus-RTU address.
  • Device Not Functioning: If the device does not work upon initial setup, double-check all connections and power sources. If issues persist, contact your retailer for support.
