4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps for proper installation of your motherboard and components.
4.1 CPU Installation (Socket AM5)
- Ensure the CPU socket lever is in the open position.
- Carefully align the triangular mark on your AMD Ryzen processor with the mark on the socket.
- Gently place the CPU into the socket without forcing it.
- Close the socket lever to secure the CPU.

4.2 Memory (RAM) Installation
This motherboard supports DDR5 memory modules. Install them into the DIMM slots.
- Open the clips at both ends of the DIMM slot.
- Align the notch on the DDR5 module with the key in the DIMM slot.
- Press down firmly on both ends of the memory module until the clips snap into place.
4.3 M.2 SSD Installation
The motherboard features M.2 slots for high-speed storage. One slot is located on the front, typically under a heatsink, and another on the rear of the PCB.

Figure 6: Close-up of the M.2 Armor heatsink on the ASRock B650M PG Lightning Motherboard. This heatsink covers the primary M.2 slot.
- Unscrew and remove the M.2 heatsink (if present) to access the slot.
- Insert the M.2 SSD into the slot at a 30-degree angle.
- Gently push down the SSD and secure it with the provided M.2 screw/standoff.
- Reattach the M.2 heatsink (if applicable).
4.4 Graphics Card Installation
Install your graphics card into the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot.
- Open the retention clip on the PCIe x16 slot.
- Align your graphics card with the slot and press down firmly until it clicks into place.
- Secure the graphics card to your chassis with screws.
4.5 Power Connections
Connect the main 24-pin ATX power connector and the 8-pin EPS 12V CPU power connector from your power supply to the motherboard.
4.6 Front Panel Connectors
Connect your chassis's front panel cables (power button, reset button, USB, audio) to the corresponding headers on the motherboard. Refer to the motherboard diagram for exact locations.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Initial Boot and BIOS/UEFI Setup
- After assembling your system, connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
- Power on your system. During POST (Power-On Self-Test), repeatedly press the Del or F2 key to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility.
- Configure boot order, enable XMP/EXPO for memory, and set other system preferences as needed.
5.2 BIOS Flashback
The BIOS Flashback feature allows you to update the BIOS without a CPU, RAM, or graphics card installed. This is useful for supporting newer CPUs not natively supported by the initial BIOS version.
- Download the latest BIOS file from the ASRock website for your specific motherboard model.
- Rename the BIOS file to
creative.rom(or as specified by ASRock) and save it to the root directory of a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive. - Insert the USB flash drive into the designated BIOS Flashback USB port on the rear I/O panel.
- Ensure the motherboard has power (24-pin ATX connected), but do not power on the system.
- Press and hold the BIOS Flashback button for approximately 3 seconds until the LED starts flashing.
- Release the button. The LED will continue to flash, indicating the BIOS update is in progress. Do not remove the USB drive or power off the system during this process.
- The LED will stop flashing when the BIOS update is complete.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your motherboard.
- Cleaning: Periodically clean dust from the motherboard and components using compressed air. Ensure the system is powered off and unplugged before cleaning.
- BIOS Updates: Keep your BIOS updated to the latest version to benefit from performance improvements, bug fixes, and support for new hardware. Always follow ASRock's official instructions for BIOS updates.
- Driver Updates: Install the latest drivers for your chipset, audio, network, and other components from the ASRock support website.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues, refer to these common troubleshooting steps.
- No Power: Check all power connections (24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, GPU power). Ensure the power supply is switched on.
- No Display/No POST: Verify that the monitor is connected and powered on. Reseat RAM modules and the graphics card. If using integrated graphics, ensure your CPU supports it and connect the monitor to the motherboard's video output.
- System Instability/Crashes: Check CPU and GPU temperatures. Ensure RAM is properly seated and running at stable speeds (try default speeds if XMP/EXPO is enabled). Update drivers and BIOS.
- Peripheral Not Detected: Try different USB ports. Ensure drivers are installed for the peripheral.
- BIOS Reset: If system becomes unbootable due to BIOS settings, clear the CMOS by either removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes or using the Clear CMOS jumper (refer to the full manual for location).
