3. Setup and Installation

3.2 Activating the Battery

The First Alert SMI110 features a sealed 10-year lithium battery. To activate the battery, you must remove the yellow pull tab located on the back of the unit. Once the tab is removed, the alarm will be powered on. The unit will chirp once to confirm activation.

3.3 Recommended Placement

For optimal protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside every bedroom. Consider additional alarms in hallways and living areas. Avoid placing alarms directly above cooking appliances or in areas with high humidity, which can lead to nuisance alarms.

3.4 Mounting the Alarm

Attach the mounting bracket to a wall or ceiling using the provided screws and drywall anchors. Once the bracket is securely installed, align the smoke alarm with the bracket and twist clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure the alarm is firmly attached to prevent accidental dislodgement.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Testing the Alarm

After installation, and at least once a week, test your smoke alarm by pressing and holding the Test/Silence button. The alarm will emit a loud, piercing sound (approximately 85 dB) to indicate it is functioning correctly. The LED indicator will also flash during the test. Release the button to stop the test.

4.2 Silence Feature

In case of a nuisance alarm (e.g., from cooking smoke), press the Test/Silence button to temporarily mute the alarm for approximately 8 minutes. The alarm will automatically reset after this period to ensure continuous protection. If the smoke condition persists, the alarm will reactivate.

4.3 LED Indicator

The LED indicator light provides visual alerts:

• Normal Operation: The LED will flash briefly every 60 seconds, indicating the alarm is powered and functioning correctly.
• Alarm Condition: The LED will flash rapidly along with the audible alarm.
• Silence Mode: The LED will flash every 10 seconds during the temporary silence period.
• End-of-Life Warning: The LED will flash twice every 60 seconds, accompanied by a chirp, indicating the unit needs to be replaced.

5.1 Regular Testing

Test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure it is operating correctly. Follow the instructions in Section 4.1.

5.2 Cleaning the Alarm

Dust and debris can affect the performance of your smoke alarm. Clean the alarm at least once a month by gently vacuuming the cover and vents with a soft brush attachment. Do not paint the alarm, as this can interfere with the sensor's ability to detect smoke.

5.3 End-of-Life Replacement

The First Alert SMI110 smoke alarm has a 10-year sealed battery and a 10-year operational life. After 10 years from the date of manufacture, the alarm will provide an end-of-life warning (two chirps and two LED flashes every 60 seconds). When this occurs, the entire unit must be replaced to maintain fire safety protection.
