  2. Prepare Portafilter:
    • Select the appropriate filter basket (1-cup, 2-cup, or ESE pod).
    • For ground coffee, add fresh, finely ground espresso coffee to the filter basket. Use the measuring spoon for accurate dosing (approx. 7g for 1 cup, 14g for 2 cups).
    • Distribute the coffee evenly and tamp firmly with the tamper. Ensure the coffee bed is level.
    • Wipe any excess coffee from the rim of the portafilter.
  3. Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the group head from the left and rotate it firmly to the right until it is securely locked.
  4. Brew Espresso:

Figure 5.2: Close-up view of espresso flowing from the portafilter spout into a clear glass, demonstrating the extraction process.

Place your preheated cup(s) under the portafilter spouts. Press the single or double espresso button. The machine will automatically dispense the correct amount of espresso. The pre-function ensures even extraction.
  5. Monitor Pressure: Observe the pressure gauge during brewing. The optimal pressure range is typically indicated on the gauge.
  6. Remove Portafilter: Once brewing is complete, wait a few seconds for the pressure to dissipate. Carefully remove the portafilter by rotating it to the left. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.

5.2. Frothing Milk

  1. Prepare Milk: Fill the stainless steel milk pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy). Do not fill more than one-third full.
  2. Activate Steam: Press the steam button on the control panel. Wait for the steam indicator light to become solid, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
  3. Purge Steam Wand: Place an empty cup under the steam wand and briefly turn the steam knob to release any condensed water. Close the knob.
  4. Froth Milk:
Hand frothing milk with the steam wand of the Caso Espresso Gourmet machine.

Figure 5.3: A hand holding a stainless steel milk pitcher under the steam wand of the Caso Espresso Gourmet machine, demonstrating the milk frothing process.

Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Turn the steam knob fully open. Angle the pitcher slightly to create a vortex. Move the pitcher up and down to incorporate air and heat the milk. Continue until desired foam consistency and temperature are reached.
  5. Clean Steam Wand: Immediately after frothing, turn off the steam knob. Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly purge the wand again to clear any internal milk.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your espresso machine.

6.1. Daily Cleaning

  • Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily. The float indicator will rise when it needs emptying.
  • Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove coffee grounds and rinse the portafilter and filter baskets under hot water. Use a brush to remove any stubborn residue.
  • Steam Wand: As described in Section 5.2, clean immediately after each use.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

6.2. Weekly Cleaning / Backflushing

  • Group Head: Use a damp cloth to wipe the shower screen and gasket of the group head.
  • Backflushing (if applicable): If your machine supports backflushing, use a blind filter basket and follow the manufacturer's instructions for backflushing with or without a cleaning tablet.

6.3. Descaling

Descaling is crucial to remove mineral buildup and maintain machine performance. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage, typically every 2-3 months.

  1. Use a commercial descaling solution specifically designed for espresso machines. Follow the instructions on the descaling solution packaging.
  2. Empty the water tank and fill it with the descaling solution mixed with water according to the product's instructions.
  3. Place a large container under the group head and steam wand.
  4. Run approximately half of the solution through the group head by pressing the espresso button.
  5. Open the steam knob and run the remaining solution through the steam wand.
  6. Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the solution to work.
  7. Empty and rinse the water tank thoroughly. Fill it with fresh water.
  8. Run several full tanks of fresh water through both the group head and steam wand to rinse out any descaling solution residue.
