5. Setup and Installation

The Bafang BBS01B controller is designed for straightforward installation. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Preparation: Ensure your bicycle is stable and the battery is disconnected. Gather necessary tools (e.g., wrenches, cable ties).
  2. Access the Motor: Depending on your bike frame, you may need to remove the crank arms and bottom bracket to access the motor housing.
  3. Remove Old Controller (if applicable): Carefully disconnect and remove the existing controller from the motor.
  4. Install New Controller: Position the new BBS01B controller into the motor housing. Ensure it fits snugly and the mounting points align.
  5. Connect Wiring: Connect the various wiring harnesses from the controller to their respective components:
    • Motor Phase Wires: Connect the three thick wires (usually yellow, green, blue) to the corresponding motor phase wires.
    • Battery Connector: Connect the main power cable to your e-bike battery.
    • Display/EB-Bus: Connect the EB-Bus cable to your display unit.
    • Speed Sensor: Attach the speed sensor cable and mount the sensor on the chainstay, ensuring the magnet passes close to it.
    • Gear Shift Sensor: Connect the gear shift sensor cable. This sensor temporarily cuts motor power during shifts for smoother transitions.
    • Headlight Connector: If using, connect your e-bike headlight to this dedicated port.
    • Brake Levers: Connect the brake lever cut-off sensors (if equipped).
  6. Secure Cables: Route all cables neatly and secure them with cable ties to prevent snagging or damage.
  7. Test Functionality: Reconnect the battery and perform a functional test of the motor, display, and all connected accessories.

Important Note: This controller is compatible with BBS01B and BBS02B motors. It is not compatible with older BBS01 motors manufactured in 2015 or earlier due to design differences. Ensure you have the correct controller version for your motor.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, operate your e-bike system as follows:

  1. Power On: Turn on your e-bike battery and then power on the display unit.
  2. Select Assist Level: Use the controls on your display to select the desired pedal assist level (e.g., 1-5). Higher levels provide more motor assistance.
  3. Pedal: Begin pedaling. The motor will engage and provide assistance based on your selected level and pedaling input.
  4. Throttle (if equipped): If your system includes a throttle, you can use it to engage the motor without pedaling, or to provide additional boost.
  5. Gear Shifting: When shifting gears, the gear shift sensor will momentarily cut motor power, allowing for smoother and less stressful gear changes.
  6. Braking: The brake cut-off sensors will disengage the motor when brakes are applied, ensuring safe stopping.
  7. Power Off: When finished riding, power off the display and then the battery.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your controller and e-bike system:

  • Inspect Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for tightness and signs of corrosion or damage.
  • Cable Management: Ensure all cables are securely routed and not rubbing against moving parts or sharp edges.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the motor and controller area clean from dirt, mud, and debris. Avoid using high-pressure washers directly on electrical components.
  • Environmental Protection: Store your e-bike in a dry place, protected from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Software Updates: If available, check for firmware updates for your controller or display unit through authorized service centers.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
