Getting Started: Setup
Unpacking and Placement

Needle Installation
- Turn the handwheel towards you to raise the needle to its highest position.
- Loosen the needle clamp screw.
- Insert the new needle with the flat side facing the back of the machine. Push it up as far as it will go.
- Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
Bobbin Winding
- Place a spool of thread on the spool pin.
- Guide the thread through the upper thread guide and around the bobbin winding tension disc.
- Insert the thread through the hole in the bobbin from the inside out.
- Place the bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle and push the spindle to the right.
- Hold the thread end and gently press the foot pedal. The bobbin will wind automatically. Stop when the bobbin is full.
- Cut the thread and push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left.
Threading the Machine
- Raise the needle to its highest position and lift the presser foot.
- Place the thread spool on the spool pin.
- Follow the numbered threading path indicated on the machine, guiding the thread through all guides and tension discs.
- Thread the needle from front to back using the mechanical needle threader or manually.
- Insert the wound bobbin into the front-loading bobbin case. Ensure the thread feeds correctly.
- Turn the handwheel to lower and raise the needle, catching the bobbin thread. Pull both threads under the presser foot and to the back.
Operating Your Sewing Machine
Stitch Selection
The Empisal Expression 889 features 18 built-in stitches. To select a stitch, turn the stitch selection dial located on the front of the machine to the desired stitch pattern. The selected stitch will be displayed at eye level.
Adjusting Stitch Length
Adjust the stitch length using the dedicated dial. This allows for simple stitching, gathering, or creating special stitches. The maximum adjustable stitch length is 4 mm.
Using the Presser Feet

The machine features a 4-step buttonhole function. Attach the buttonhole foot and follow the markings on the foot and machine to create precise buttonholes in four easy steps.
Twin-Needle Sewing
