Tedelex Aluminium Pressure Cooker (7 Liter, Model TDPCI7) User Manual

Important Safety, Operating, and Maintenance Instructions

Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient use of your Tedelex Aluminium Pressure Cooker. Please read it thoroughly before first use and retain it for future reference. Following these guidelines will ensure optimal performance and longevity of your appliance.

Important Safety Instructions

When using pressure cookers, basic safety precautions should always be followed:

  • Read all instructions carefully before using the pressure cooker.
  • Do not fill the pressure cooker more than two-thirds full. For foods that expand during cooking (e.g., rice, dried vegetables, legumes), do not fill more than half full. Overfilling can lead to blockages and unsafe pressure levels.
  • Ensure the lid is properly closed and securely locked before applying heat. Never attempt to open the lid while the cooker is under pressure.
  • Never force the lid open. Wait until all internal pressure has been completely released, indicated by the pressure indicator dropping and no more steam escaping.
  • Always check the pressure regulator and safety valve for any blockages or food particles before each use. A blocked valve can prevent proper pressure release.
  • Use the pressure cooker only on appropriate heat sources as specified: electric, gas, and induction stovetops.
  • Do not touch hot surfaces. Always use the cool-to-touch Bakelite handles and oven mitts or pot holders when handling the hot pressure cooker.
  • Keep the pressure cooker out of reach of children, especially when in use.
  • Do not use the pressure cooker for purposes other than its intended use for cooking food.
  • This pressure cooker is equipped with an automatic opening and closing safety device, an over-pressure valve, and a pressure regulator for enhanced safety. Do not tamper with or modify these safety mechanisms.
  • Exercise extreme caution when moving a pressure cooker containing hot liquids.

Key Components

  • Main Body: The high-quality aluminium pot designed for rapid and even heat distribution.
  • Lid: Features integrated safety mechanisms for secure operation.
  • Pressure Regulator: A device on the lid that controls and maintains the desired internal pressure during cooking.
  • Over-Pressure Valve: A secondary safety release mechanism designed to activate if the primary pressure regulator fails.
  • Bakelite Handles: Ergonomically designed, cool-to-touch handles for safe and comfortable handling.
  • Gasket/Sealing Ring: A flexible ring located inside the lid that creates an airtight seal between the lid and the pot, essential for pressure building.

Setup and First Use

Before using your Tedelex Pressure Cooker for the first time, please follow these steps:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials, labels, and protective films. Inspect the pressure cooker for any signs of damage.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Wash the pot, lid, and all removable parts (including the gasket and pressure regulator) with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly under running water and dry completely with a soft cloth.
  3. Gasket Installation: Ensure the sealing gasket is correctly and firmly seated in the designated groove on the underside of the lid. A properly installed gasket is crucial for an airtight seal.
  4. Safety Check: Before each use, verify that the pressure regulator and over-pressure valve are clear of any food particles or obstructions. Ensure they can move freely.

Operating Instructions

1. Preparing for Cooking

  1. Place your ingredients and the required amount of liquid into the pressure cooker. A minimum of 1 cup (250ml) of liquid is generally needed for pressure to build.
  2. Observe the maximum fill lines: do not exceed two-thirds full for most foods, and no more than half full for foods that expand significantly (e.g., rice, dried beans, pasta).

2. Closing the Lid

  1. Align the lid with the pot, ensuring the handles are correctly positioned.
  2. Lower the lid onto the pot and rotate the lid handle until it locks securely in place. The automatic opening and closing safety device will engage, preventing the lid from being opened under pressure.

3. Applying Heat

  1. Place the sealed pressure cooker on a suitable heat source (electric, gas, or induction).
  2. Set the heat to high. As the internal temperature rises, pressure will begin to build inside the cooker.
  3. Once full pressure is reached, steam will begin to escape steadily from the pressure regulator. This indicates that the cooking process under pressure has begun.

4. Cooking Under Pressure

  1. Once steam is steadily escaping from the pressure regulator, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle, consistent release of steam. Avoid excessive steam release, which can deplete liquid too quickly.
  2. Begin timing your recipe according to the recommended pressure cooking times.

5. Releasing Pressure

After the cooking time is complete, pressure must be released before the lid can be opened. There are two main methods:

Natural Release

  • Remove the pressure cooker from the heat source.
  • Allow it to cool down naturally until the pressure indicator drops completely and no more steam is released. This method is ideal for foods that benefit from continued gentle cooking, such as stews, roasts, and grains.

Quick Release (Use with caution)

  • For foods that require precise cooking times or to stop cooking quickly, you may use the quick release method.
  • Carefully move the pressure regulator to the steam release position (if your model has this feature) or run cold water over the edge of the lid (avoiding the pressure regulator) until pressure is released.
  • Caution: Rapid steam release can cause foaming or splattering with certain foods, especially those with high starch content. Always direct steam away from your face and body.

6. Opening the Lid

  1. Ensure all internal pressure has been completely released before attempting to open the lid. The lid should open easily without any force. If resistance is felt, pressure is still present.
  2. Rotate the lid handle to unlock and carefully lift the lid away from you to avoid any residual steam burns.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your pressure cooker.

  1. After Each Use: Wash the pot, lid, and gasket with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots and potential corrosion.
  2. Gasket Care: Periodically remove the gasket from the lid and clean it thoroughly. Inspect the gasket for any cracks, tears, or signs of wear. A worn gasket can compromise the seal. Replace the gasket if necessary (typically recommended every 1-2 years, or sooner with frequent use).
  3. Pressure Regulator and Valve: Ensure these components are always free from food particles or blockages. Use a small brush or toothpick if needed to clear any debris.
  4. Storage: Store the pressure cooker with the lid inverted or slightly ajar on top of the pot. This allows air circulation, prevents odors from building up, and helps preserve the gasket.
  5. Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads, as these can scratch and damage the aluminium finish.

Troubleshooting

Refer to the table below for common issues and their solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pressure not buildingLid not properly sealed; insufficient liquid; gasket damaged or improperly seated; pressure regulator/valve blocked.Ensure lid is securely locked; add more liquid (minimum 1 cup); inspect and reposition or replace gasket; clean pressure regulator and safety valve.
Steam leaking from lid edgeGasket improperly seated or damaged; food debris on rim of pot or lid.Reposition or replace gasket; thoroughly clean the rim of the pot and the underside of the lid.
Lid cannot be opened after cookingInternal pressure is still present.Do not force the lid. Allow more time for natural pressure release or use the quick release method carefully until all pressure is gone.
Food is undercookedInsufficient cooking time; pressure not maintained consistently during cooking.Increase cooking time for future recipes; ensure a steady, gentle steam release is maintained throughout the cooking period.
