Before Using Your Russell Hobbs Filter Coffee Maker for the First Time
Warning: Disconnect the power cord before performing maintenance or troubleshooting to reduce the risk of electric shock.
Carefully unpack and remove all protective packing materials. Wipe the exterior with a clean damp cloth. Do not immerse the stand or carafe in water. Wash the carafe, lid, and filter holder with warm, soapy water, rinse, and dry. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners.
NOTE: Rinse the machine by running water through it without coffee before the first brew to remove any dust.
IMPORTANT: Use only cold water. The automatic brewing system is designed for cold water only.
Coffee Filters
Cone-shaped paper filters (#4 size) are recommended. Permanent nylon filters can also be used.
Basket-styled paper filters are not recommended as they may not fit correctly and cause overflow.
Coffee
Use medium-ground filter coffee. Start with approximately two rounded teaspoons per cup, adjusting to taste.
Milk
Use warm milk to avoid overcooling the coffee. For best flavor, coffee should be hot but not scalding.
Using Bottled Water
Use flat water without added ingredients or flavorings. Sparkling water can adversely affect flavor.
Taste
Do not reheat coffee, as it damages the machine and impairs flavor. Clean the filter, holder, basket, and carafe after each use to prevent taint from previous brews.
Operating Your Russell Hobbs Quartz Filter Coffee Maker
- Place the coffee maker on a flat, level, heat-resistant surface.
- Lift the water tank lid up and back.
- Use the carafe to fill the water tank with cold water. Do not fill above the 'max' level.
- Close the water tank lid.
- Place the carafe on the hotplate, ensuring it's correctly aligned for the non-drip valve to function.
- Alternatively, remove the water tank, fill it with cool water, and reattach it, ensuring it's locked.
- Swing out the filter basket to expose the filter.
- Add the desired amount of ground coffee (e.g., one level tablespoon per cup), adjusting for strength.
- Swing the basket back into place. Do not over-fill the filter.
- Use only fresh, cool water.
- Experiment with coffee amounts for preferred strength.
- The amount of brewed coffee will be less than the water added due to absorption by coffee grounds.
- Insert the power cord into a 230-240V AC outlet and turn on the power. The clock will flash 12:00.
Coffee Now
- Ignore the clock display.
- Press the brewing button [▶️]. The brewing light will illuminate, and coffee will begin to drip into the carafe shortly after.
Coffee Later (Using the Timer)
NB: If you set the timer incorrectly, you may need to reset it by going around the clock or unplugging the unit.
- To set the clock, press the 'h' (hour) and 'min' (minute) buttons. The 'pm' light indicates when you pass noon.
- To set the timer, press the 'auto' button [⚙️] and then set the desired time using the 'h' and 'min' buttons.
- Release the buttons and press the 'auto' button again to activate the timer. The 'auto' light will illuminate.
- Brewing will start at the pre-selected time.
- NB: You cannot make coffee manually when 'auto' mode is active.
- To cancel 'auto' mode, press the 'auto' button for a few seconds; the 'auto' light will turn off.
- The display retains settings until unplugged, resetting to 12:00 upon plugging back in.
Pause and Pour
- You can remove the carafe to pour coffee at any time. The non-drip valve prevents dripping.
- Replace the carafe within 25 seconds to avoid overflowing.
Finished?
- When the carafe is empty, press the power button [off], unplug the machine, and let it cool for 10 minutes before cleaning or refilling.
- WARNING: Be cautious of steam when swinging out the basket to replace the filter.
Hotplate
The hotplate keeps coffee warm while the machine is on. Avoid leaving it on for too long (over an hour) as chemical changes can degrade flavor.
TIP: Store unused coffee in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer.
Brewing a Second Pot Coffee
Allow the unit to cool for at least 10 minutes between brewing cycles. While off, dispose of the used filter, rinse the carafe and filter basket, place a fresh filter, and repeat the brewing procedure.
Auto Shut Off
The coffee maker features an auto shut-off function that turns the unit off automatically once the brewing cycle is complete.
Hints for Great Tasting Coffee & General Information
- For best results, use medium-ground filter coffee, adjusting the amount to taste (suggested: two rounded teaspoons per cup).
- Ensure the coffee maker, carafe, filter holder, and water reservoir are clean for optimal taste. Regular cleaning is highly recommended.
- Always use fresh, cool water.
- Finer coffee granules promote fuller extraction and richer flavor.
- Store unused coffee in a cool, dry place, preferably sealed in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain freshness.
- For optimum flavor, buy fresh beans and grind them just before brewing.
- Do not re-use coffee granules; this impairs flavor.
- Reheating coffee is not recommended; it's best immediately after brewing.
- Small oil drops in brewed coffee are due to oil extraction from grounds, especially with heavily roasted coffee or over-extraction, indicating a need for cleaning.
Serving and Keeping Warm
- You may remove the carafe after brewing is complete.
- Serve coffee immediately for the best flavor.
- Once brewing is finished, the coffee maker will switch off. Swing out the filter basket and remove the filter.
- Discard used coffee grounds. If using a paper filter, discard it with the grounds. Rinse the filter.
NOTE: Allow the coffee maker to cool for approximately 10 minutes between brewing procedures.
Care, Maintenance and Cleaning
Before cleaning, ensure the plug is removed from the mains socket and the machine is completely cooled.
- Unplug the machine and let it cool.
- Swing out the basket to expose the filter and filter holder.
- Lift out the filter holder and filter.
- Tip out the used coffee granules.
- Wipe the basket, hotplate, and machine body with a damp cloth.
- Wash the filter and filter holder in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and dry.
- Reassemble by placing the filter into the filter holder, the filter holder into the basket, and swinging the basket back into the machine.
- Do not wash any part in a dishwasher.
- Do not immerse the machine in any liquid.
- Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Descaling
Scale build-up can overheat the element, reduce its working life, and cause premature cut-out. De-scale frequently using a suitable de-scaler for plastic-bodied products, following the de-scaler's instructions. After de-scaling, run the machine twice without coffee to ensure no chemical residues remain.
NOTE: Products returned under guarantee with faults due to scale may incur a repair charge.
- The filter basket can be removed for easy cleaning.
- Clean the exterior with a damp cloth and buff with a dry cloth.
- The carafe, carafe lid, and filter basket can be washed with warm soapy water.
- The base plate can be wiped with a clean damp cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or agents on any part of the coffee maker.
- Ensure the carafe is cold before cleaning.
- Never immerse the appliance base or carafe in water.
- Avoid using a cloth to clean the inside of the water reservoir, as it may leave deposits. Rinse with cold water periodically.
