Setup

1. Attaching the Reel to a Fishing Rod

  1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod.
  2. Tighten the reel seat's locking mechanism until the reel is firmly secured and does not wobble.

2. Spooling Fishing Line

The Penn Pursuit IV 4000 features a machined and anodized aluminum spool designed to hold ample fishing line. Refer to the specifications section for line capacity details (e.g., Monofilament: 270m/8kg, 220m/10kg, 165m/12kg; Braid: 360m/15lb, 260m/20lb, 185m/30lb).

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an appropriate fishing knot (e.g., arbor knot).
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Hold the line under slight tension and slowly reel in, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool. Do not overfill the spool.

3. Adjusting Handle Orientation

The Penn Pursuit IV 4000 reel is ambidextrous, allowing the handle to be positioned for either right-hand or left-hand retrieve. To change the handle side, simply unscrew the handle from one side and screw it into the opposite side of the reel body.

Operating Instructions

1. Casting

  1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Open the bail arm.
  3. Use your index finger to hold the line against the rod.
  4. Swing the rod forward, releasing the line with your index finger at the desired point in the cast.
  5. As the lure or bait approaches the water, gently feather the line with your finger to control the distance and prevent backlash.
  6. Close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle once the lure has landed.

2. Retrieving

Turn the handle to retrieve the line. The Penn Pursuit IV 4000 has a gear ratio of 6.2:1, retrieving approximately 94 cm (37 inches) of line per crank. This high retrieve rate is efficient for various fishing techniques.

3. Adjusting the Drag System

The HT-100 carbon fiber drag system provides smooth and consistent drag pressure. The drag knob is located on the front of the spool.

  • Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension.
  • Turn the drag knob counter-clockwise to decrease drag tension.
  • Set the drag before fishing. A common guideline is to set the drag to approximately one-third of the line's breaking strength.

4. Instant Anti-Reverse

The instant anti-reverse bearing eliminates rotor back-play, ensuring immediate hook sets. This feature is always active and requires no user adjustment.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning After Use

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Pay attention to crevices where salt or debris might accumulate.

2. Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the bail arm pivot points and handle knob.
  • Apply a thin layer of reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear if you perform a deeper cleaning. Consult a professional if unsure.
  • Use only lubricants specifically designed for fishing reels.

3. Storage

  • Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Loosen the drag knob slightly before storing to prevent compression of the drag washers.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Stiff or rough retrieveDirt/salt buildup, lack of lubrication, damaged internal components.Clean and lubricate the reel. If problem persists, seek professional service.
Drag not smooth or inconsistentDirty or worn drag washers, improper drag setting.Clean drag washers. Ensure drag is not overtightened during storage. Replace washers if worn.
Line tangles or loops on spoolOverfilled spool, line twist, improper spooling.Remove some line if overfilled. Address line twist by trailing line behind a boat or walking it out. Respool line correctly.
Bail arm not closing properlyDebris in bail mechanism, bent bail wire.Clean the bail mechanism. If bent, gently attempt to straighten or seek professional repair.
