Introduction
The Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 is a powerful hybrid drum machine and rhythm synthesizer designed to generate unique and thunderous rhythmic textures. It features four hybrid voices, each with multiple digital sound engine modes and a multimode analog filter. An intuitive 4-track step sequencer, along with advanced features like step division, multiplication, ratcheting, probability, and swing, provides extensive control over pattern creation. The Perkons HD-01 also includes onboard effects such as an emulated bucket brigade delay, an optical compressor, and a master overdrive control, offering a comprehensive sound design toolkit for musicians and producers.
Setup Guide
1. Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove the Perkons HD-01 from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. Retain the original packaging for future transport or storage.
2. Power Connection
Connect the provided power adapter to the DC input jack on the rear panel of the Perkons HD-01. Plug the other end of the power adapter into a suitable electrical outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before connecting power.
3. Audio Connections
- Main Output: Connect the main stereo outputs (L/R) to your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier using 1/4" TS cables.
- Individual Voice Outputs: For more detailed mixing and external processing, connect the individual voice outputs to separate channels on your mixer or audio interface.
- FX Send/Returns: Utilize the dedicated FX Send and Return jacks to integrate external effects processors into your signal chain.
4. Trigger Inputs
The Perkons HD-01 features four trigger inputs. These can be used to trigger individual drum voices from external sources such as drum pads, sequencers, or other modular equipment. Connect your trigger source to the corresponding 1/4" trigger input jacks.
5. Initial Power-On
Once all connections are secure, switch the power button on the rear panel to the ON position. The unit will power up, and the front panel LEDs will illuminate.
Operating Instructions
This section details the functions of the Perkons HD-01's controls and how to operate the device.

Voice Sections (Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Voice 4)
Each of the four voices on the Perkons HD-01 is identical in its control layout, allowing for independent sound shaping. Each voice features the following controls:
- TUNE: Adjusts the pitch of the drum sound.
- DECAY: Controls the length of the sound's decay envelope.
- ALGO: Selects one of the three digital sound engine modes for the voice, fundamentally changing its character.
- PARAM 1 & PARAM 2: These parameters offer additional sound shaping capabilities, specific to the selected ALGO mode. Their function varies depending on the algorithm.
- MODE: Selects the filter mode (LP - Low Pass, BP - Band Pass, HP - High Pass) for the analog filter.
- CUTOFF: Adjusts the cutoff frequency of the analog filter.
- DRIVE: Controls the amount of saturation or distortion applied to the voice.
- FX SEND: Determines the amount of signal sent from this voice to the master effects section.
- LEVEL: Sets the output volume of the individual voice.
BBD (Bucket Brigade Delay) Section
This section controls the integrated analog delay effect:
- TIME: Adjusts the delay time. Can be set to SHORT or LONG mode.
- FEEDBACK: Controls the amount of delay signal fed back into the input, creating repeats.
- COLOUR: Shapes the tone of the delay repeats.
- LFO RATE: Sets the speed of the Low Frequency Oscillator for modulating the delay.
- MOD. DEPTH: Controls the intensity of the LFO modulation on the delay.
Master Section
The master section provides overall control for the Perkons HD-01's output and master effects:
- VOLUME: Master output volume control.
- MASTER SEND: Controls the overall amount of signal sent to the master effects.
- COMP. THRSHLD (Compressor Threshold): Sets the level at which the master compressor begins to reduce the dynamic range.
- COMP. AMT (Compressor Amount): Controls the intensity of the compression applied.
Sequencer and Performance Controls
The lower section of the Perkons HD-01 is dedicated to its powerful 4-track step sequencer and performance features:
- TEMPO: Knob to adjust the master tempo of the sequencer (from SLOW to FAST).
- DIVIDE Buttons (+8, +4, +2, +4/3): Modify the step division for rhythmic variations.
- MULTIPLY Buttons (x1, x2, x3/2, x4): Modify the step multiplication for rhythmic variations.
- GROOVE Buttons (A, B, C, RND): Apply different groove templates or random groove to the sequence.
- PLAY MODE Buttons (FWD, BWD, PP, RND): Select the playback direction or pattern playback mode (Forward, Backward, Ping-Pong, Random).
- MODULATION Section:
- WAVE: Selects the waveform for the modulation LFO.
- PATTERN: Selects the current pattern.
- KIT: Selects the current drum kit.
- SYNC: Synchronizes the device with external clock sources.
- MOD LVL (Modulation Level): Adjusts the overall intensity of modulation.
- Control Buttons (SHIFT, SHUFFLE, LAST, CLEAR, REC, PLAY/STOP, RESET):
- SHIFT: Accesses secondary functions of other buttons.
- SHUFFLE: Applies a shuffle amount to the sequence.
- LAST: Jumps to the last step of the sequence.
- CLEAR: Clears steps or parameters.
- REC: Toggles record mode for step sequencing.
- PLAY/STOP: Starts or stops sequence playback.
- RESET: Resets the sequence to the beginning.
- MODULATION DESTINATION Buttons (TUNE, DECAY, P1, P2, VCF, DRIVE, FX, LVL): Selects the parameter to be modulated.
- MODULATION DEPTH Buttons (10% - 80%): Sets the intensity of the modulation for the selected destination.
- RATCHET, ODDS1, ODDS2, PROB: Advanced sequencing features for adding ratcheting, probability, and other rhythmic variations to steps.

Maintenance
Cleaning
To maintain the appearance and functionality of your Perkons HD-01, regularly clean the unit. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe down the chassis and knobs. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner can be used, but ensure no liquid enters the unit. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish and components.
Storage
When not in use for extended periods, store the Perkons HD-01 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. It is recommended to store the unit in its original packaging or a protective case to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.
