Package Contents

Verify that all items are present before beginning installation:

  • 1x DC4499 6 Quart Double Acting 12V Hydraulic Pump
  • 1x Two-button Up/Down Controller with 15' Extension Cord
  • Mounting Hardware (may vary)

Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your hydraulic pump. If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified professional.

1. Mounting the Pump

  1. Select a secure, level, and dry location for mounting the pump, away from excessive heat or debris.
  2. Ensure there is adequate space for ventilation and access for maintenance.
  3. Use appropriate bolts and washers to firmly secure the pump to the mounting surface.

2. Hydraulic Connections

  1. Connect the pressure line from the pump to the "UP" port of your hydraulic cylinder.
  2. Connect the return line from the pump to the "DOWN" port of your hydraulic cylinder.
  3. Ensure all hydraulic fittings are clean and free of debris before connecting. Use thread sealant or tape as recommended by the fitting manufacturer.
  4. Tighten all connections securely to prevent leaks, but do not overtighten.

3. Electrical Connections

  1. Connect the positive (+) terminal of the pump to a fused 12V DC power source capable of supplying the required amperage.
  2. Connect the negative (-) terminal of the pump to a good chassis ground.
  3. Connect the two-button controller to the designated port on the pump. Ensure the connection is secure.
  4. Verify all electrical connections are tight and properly insulated to prevent shorts.

4. Filling the Reservoir

  1. Remove the filler cap from the hydraulic reservoir.
  2. Fill the reservoir with a high-quality hydraulic fluid (e.g., AW-32 or AW-46) to the recommended level, typically indicated by a sight glass or dipstick. Do not overfill.
  3. Replace the filler cap securely.

Operating Instructions

This hydraulic pump is designed for simple operation using the included two-button controller.

1. Initial Start-up and Bleeding Air

  1. After installation and filling the reservoir, briefly press the "UP" button on the controller. The pump motor should activate, and the cylinder should begin to extend.
  2. If the cylinder does not move smoothly or makes unusual noises, there may be air in the system. Cycle the cylinder fully up and down several times to bleed out any trapped air.
  3. Check the hydraulic fluid level after bleeding and top off if necessary.

2. Normal Operation

  • To raise the dump trailer or hydraulic cylinder, press and hold the "UP" button on the controller. Release the button when the desired height is reached.
  • To lower the dump trailer or hydraulic cylinder, press and hold the "DOWN" button on the controller. Release the button when the desired position is reached.
  • Avoid continuously running the pump motor for extended periods without a load, as this can cause overheating.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your hydraulic pump.

  • Fluid Level Check: Regularly check the hydraulic fluid level and top off as needed. Use only clean, recommended hydraulic fluid.
  • Fluid Replacement: Replace the hydraulic fluid annually or every 200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Refer to the fluid manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Filter Inspection: If your system includes a filter, inspect and replace it according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Electrical Connections: Periodically inspect all electrical connections for corrosion, looseness, or damage. Tighten or repair as necessary.
  • Hose and Fitting Inspection: Check hydraulic hoses and fittings for leaks, cracks, or wear. Replace any damaged components immediately.
  • Cleaning: Keep the pump and reservoir clean and free of dirt and debris.

Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions to common issues you might encounter.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Pump motor does not run.No power, loose electrical connection, faulty switch, blown fuse.Check battery voltage, inspect all electrical connections, test the controller switch, check and replace fuse if necessary.
Pump runs but cylinder does not move or moves slowly.Low hydraulic fluid, air in the system, clogged filter, faulty relief valve, internal pump issue.Check and fill fluid, bleed air from the system, inspect/replace filter, consult a professional for valve/pump issues.
Hydraulic fluid leaks.Loose fittings, damaged hoses, worn seals.Tighten fittings, replace damaged hoses, replace worn seals.
Pump overheats.Low fluid level, continuous operation under heavy load, restricted flow, incorrect fluid type.Check fluid level, allow pump to cool, ensure proper ventilation, verify correct fluid type.
