1. Introduction and Overview

The SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE PROJECT is an external hard drive designed for professionals requiring high-capacity storage and fast data transfer for demanding creative workflows. It features a robust design and versatile connectivity options to streamline your project management and archiving needs.

Key features include:

  • Up to 12TB of storage capacity for backing up and saving high-value content.
  • Integrated 7200RPM Ultrastar enterprise-class hard drive for long-term reliability and transfer speeds up to 250MB/s.
  • PRO-BLADE SSD Mag slot (10Gbps) for expanding SSD capacity and performance (PRO-BLADE SSD Mag sold separately).
  • High-performance Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) interface and USB (10Gbps) compatibility.
  • Color-coded cable indicators for easy and correct connection.

2. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your SanDisk Professional G-Drive Project:

  1. Unpack the Device: Carefully remove the G-Drive Project from its packaging. Ensure all components, including the power adapter and necessary cables, are present.
  2. Connect Power: Connect the provided power adapter to the 12V DC port on the back of the G-Drive Project and then to a power outlet.
  3. Connect to Computer: Use a Thunderbolt 3 cable for optimal performance (up to 40Gbps) or a USB-C cable (up to 10Gbps) to connect the G-Drive Project to your computer. The color-coded cable indicators on the device and cables help ensure correct connection.
  4. Power On: Press the power button on the back of the device. The LED indicator will illuminate.
  5. Initial Formatting (Windows Users): The drive is typically pre-formatted for macOS. If you are using a Windows operating system, you will need to format the drive. Refer to your operating system's disk management utility for instructions on how to format the drive. Detailed instructions can often be found on the Western Digital support website.
  6. Optional: Insert PRO-BLADE SSD Mag: If you have a PRO-BLADE SSD Mag (sold separately), insert it into the dedicated slot on the front of the G-Drive Project for expanded SSD capacity and performance.

3. Operating the Device

Once set up, the G-Drive Project functions as a high-speed external storage solution.

  • Data Transfer: Drag and drop files to and from the drive as you would with any other external storage device. Leverage the Thunderbolt 3 connection for the fastest transfer speeds, ideal for large video files and raw images.
  • PRO-BLADE SSD Mag Integration: If a PRO-BLADE SSD Mag is inserted, it will appear as an additional storage volume. This allows for quick transfers and editing directly from the SSD, then offloading to the larger HDD for archiving.
  • LED Indicator: The LED on the back of the device indicates power status and activity. You can adjust its brightness using the LED dimmer button next to the power port.

4. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your G-Drive Project, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Physical Care: The device features a robust metal body and rubber feet for stability. Handle it with care to prevent drops or impacts. Keep it in a clean, dry environment.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the ventilation grilles are not obstructed to allow for proper airflow and heat dissipation.
  • Safe Ejection: Always safely eject the drive from your operating system before disconnecting it or powering it off to prevent data corruption.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the SanDisk Professional support website for any available firmware updates for your device.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your G-Drive Project, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Drive Not Recognized:
    • Ensure the power adapter is securely connected and the device is powered on.
    • Verify the data cable (Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C) is correctly connected to both the drive and your computer.
    • Try a different port on your computer or a different cable.
    • For Windows users, ensure the drive has been properly formatted for Windows. Check Disk Management to see if the drive is detected but unformatted.
    • Confirm your computer's ports are compatible (e.g., a Thunderbolt 3 drive requires a Thunderbolt 3 port for full functionality, though it is USB compatible).
  • Slow Transfer Speeds:
    • Ensure you are using a Thunderbolt 3 cable and connecting to a Thunderbolt 3 port on your computer for maximum speed.
    • Close any unnecessary applications that might be consuming system resources.
    • Check the health of your drive using disk utility software.
  • Intermittent Connection/Ejection:
    • Ensure all cables are firmly seated.
    • Avoid placing the drive in areas prone to vibrations or excessive heat.
    • Test with a different power outlet or cable if possible.
