1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the safe and effective operation of the UNI-T UT890C and UT890D+ True RMS Digital Multimeters. These devices are designed for measuring AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode, continuity, and temperature (UT890C only). The UT890D+ model also includes a LIVE function for distinguishing live and neutral wires.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to safety precautions when using the multimeter. Failure to do so may result in electric shock, injury, or damage to the meter or equipment under test.

  • Do not exceed the maximum input values for any range.
  • Exercise extreme caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Ensure the test leads are in good condition and properly connected.
  • Do not operate the meter if it appears damaged or if the battery cover is not properly closed.
  • Always turn off power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before measuring resistance, continuity, diodes, or capacitance.
  • Replace the battery when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.

3.1 Multimeter Components

  • LCD Screen: Displays measurement readings and indicators.
  • Function Button (SELECT): Used to switch between different measurement modes within a single rotary switch position (e.g., AC/DC, Diode/Continuity).
  • MAX/MIN Switch: Toggles between maximum and minimum value display during measurement.
  • Insulating Protective Cover: Provides protection for the device.
  • Current Jacks (mA, A): Input terminals for current measurements.
  • Transistor Jack (hFE): Socket for transistor testing.
  • Data Hold (HOLD): Short press to hold the current reading; long press to activate LCD backlight.
  • Function Switch (Rotary Dial): Selects the desired measurement function.
  • Measuring Jack (VΩHz): Input terminal for voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance, and diode measurements.
  • Common Jack (COM): Common input terminal for all measurements.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The multimeter requires 1 Lithium metal battery (included). To install or replace the battery:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned off and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
  4. Insert the new battery, observing correct polarity.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

5. Operating Instructions

To perform a measurement, select the desired function using the rotary dial and connect the test leads appropriately.

5.1 Voltage Measurement (AC/DC)

Turn the rotary dial to the 'V~' for AC voltage or 'V=' for DC voltage range. Insert the red test lead into the 'VΩHz' jack and the black test lead into the 'COM' jack. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component to be measured.

5.2 Current Measurement (AC/DC)

Turn the rotary dial to the 'A~' for AC current or 'A=' for DC current range. For currents up to 600mA, use the 'mA' jack. For currents up to 20A, use the '20A' jack. Insert the red test lead into the appropriate current jack and the black test lead into the 'COM' jack. Connect the meter in series with the circuit.

5.3 Resistance, Capacitance, Diode, and Continuity Measurement

Turn the rotary dial to the 'Ω', 'F', or diode/continuity symbol. Use the 'SELECT' button to cycle through modes if necessary. Insert the red test lead into the 'VΩHz' jack and the black test lead into the 'COM' jack. Connect the test leads across the component.

5.4 Frequency Measurement

The meter supports both low-voltage (below 30V, 10Hz~10MHz) and high-voltage (5V~750V, 10Hz~10kHz) frequency measurements. Turn the rotary dial to the 'Hz' position. Connect the test leads as for voltage measurement. The circuit for measuring high frequency needs to be switched to the frequency file corresponding to the voltage file.

5.5 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Function

The NCV function allows for non-contact detection of AC voltage. Turn the rotary dial to the 'NCV' position. Bring the top of the meter close to the wire or circuit. If AC voltage is detected, the meter will beep and the display will show the sensed electric field strength.

5.6 LIVE Function (UT890D+ Only)

The UT890D+ model features a LIVE function to distinguish between live and neutral wires. Insert a single test pen into the circuit. The display will indicate 'LIVE' for a live wire and 'EF' for a neutral wire, accompanied by acousto-optic indications.

5.7 Data Hold and MAX/MIN

Press the 'HOLD' button briefly to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release. Press the 'MAX/MIN' button to display the maximum or minimum measured value during a measurement session.

5.8 Accurate Measurement Examples

6. Maintenance

6.1 General Care

  • Keep the meter dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry.
  • Use and store the meter in normal temperature environments. Extreme temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices.
  • Handle the meter gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards or case.
  • Keep the meter away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts.
  • Wipe the meter with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator (typically a battery icon) appears on the display, replace the battery as described in Section 4.1. Always use the specified battery type.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Fuse Blown Alarm

The UT890 series includes an automatic fuse blown detection and alarm. If the fuse is blown during current measurement, the meter will display a 'FUSE' alarm and emit an audible warning. This indicates that the fuse needs to be replaced. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type.

7.2 No Display or Incorrect Readings

  • Check battery level. Replace if low.
  • Ensure test leads are correctly inserted into the appropriate jacks.
  • Verify the rotary dial is set to the correct measurement function.
  • If measuring current, ensure the meter is connected in series and the correct current jack is used.
