2. Safety Information

Your safety and the safety of others are paramount. Always adhere to the following safety precautions:

  • Ventilation: This is a ventless heater, but adequate ventilation is still required. Ensure the room has sufficient air circulation.
  • Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS): The heater is equipped with an ODS system that automatically shuts off the unit if oxygen levels in the room become too low. Do not tamper with or bypass this safety device.
  • Fuel Type: This heater operates on either natural gas or liquid propane. Ensure the correct fuel type is connected and that all gas connections are secure and leak-free.
  • Propane Tank Requirement: For optimal performance and consistent fuel vaporization, especially in colder temperatures, a minimum 100lb propane tank is recommended for liquid propane operation.
  • Location: Do not install or use this heater in a bedroom, bathroom, recreational vehicle, or any unventilated space. Maintain proper clearances from combustible materials as specified in the installation section.
  • Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the heater, especially when it is operating, as surfaces can become very hot.
  • Flammable Materials: Never store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
  • Professional Installation: Gas connections should be performed by a qualified professional in accordance with local codes and regulations.

4.3 Gas Connection

Connect the heater to your natural gas or liquid propane supply. This connection must be performed by a qualified gas technician. Ensure all connections are tight and tested for leaks using a non-corrosive leak detection solution.

4.4 Blower Installation (If Applicable)

If your model includes a separate blower, follow the instructions provided with the blower for installation. The blower typically requires an electrical connection to operate, while the heater itself does not require electricity for heating.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to safely operate your HearthSense IR16T-BB heater.

5.1 Lighting the Pilot

  1. Ensure the gas supply is turned on.
  2. Turn the control knob to the "OFF" position, then push it in and wait for 5 minutes to allow any accumulated gas to dissipate.
  3. Turn the control knob to the "PILOT" position, then push and hold it in.
  4. While holding the knob in, press the "IGNITOR" button repeatedly until the pilot flame ignites. You should see a small flame at the pilot burner.
  5. Continue to hold the control knob in for approximately 30-60 seconds after the pilot ignites to allow the thermocouple to heat up.
  6. Release the control knob. If the pilot flame extinguishes, repeat steps 3-5.

5.2 Adjusting Heat Output

  1. Once the pilot is lit, turn the control knob from the "PILOT" position to the desired heat setting (1-5).
  2. The heater features 5 variable heat settings, allowing you to adjust the heat output from Low to High.

  • Pilot and Burner Inspection: Periodically inspect the pilot and main burner for proper flame appearance. The pilot flame should be steady and blue. Any yellowing or flickering may indicate a problem requiring professional service.
  • Gas Connections: Annually check all gas connections for leaks using a leak detection solution.
  • Storage: If storing the heater for an extended period, ensure the gas supply is turned off and the unit is clean and dry.

7. Troubleshooting
