Operating Instructions
Basic Gameplay
- Moving Pieces: The board automatically recognizes piece movements. For optimal recognition, lift pieces cleanly from their square and place them firmly on the destination square.
- LED Indicators: When playing against the AI or an online opponent, LEDs embedded in the board will illuminate to indicate your opponent's moves (from-square and to-square).
- Move Validation: The app validates all moves. If an illegal move is attempted, the app will notify you, and the board's LEDs may indicate the error.
- Captures: When capturing a piece, remove the opponent's piece first, then move your attacking piece to the captured square.
- Special Moves: For castling, move the king first, then the rook. For pawn promotion, replace the pawn with the desired promoted piece (e.g., queen). The board supports Chess960 (Fischer Random Chess) rules.

Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe the wooden board and pieces. Avoid abrasive cleaners or excessive moisture, which can damage the wood finish and electronic components.
- Storage: Store the chess set in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures to prevent warping or damage to the wood.
- Battery Care: For long-term storage, ensure the board is partially charged (around 50%) and recharge it periodically to maintain battery health.
Troubleshooting
Connection Issues
- Board not connecting to app: Ensure the board is powered on and fully charged. Verify Bluetooth is enabled on your device. Restart both the board and the app.
- App not recognizing moves: Ensure pieces are placed and moved cleanly. Check the app settings for a "latency" option; increasing this (e.g., to 500ms or 750ms) can improve recognition for sliding pieces.
LED Malfunctions
- LEDs staying on or flickering: This can sometimes indicate the app is confused. Try closing and restarting the Chessnut app. If the issue persists, restart the board.
General App Issues
- App freezing or crashing: Ensure your app is updated to the latest version. Clear the app's cache or reinstall if necessary.
- Router blocking access: If experiencing issues with online features or account creation, check your router settings. You may need to add "chessnut.com" to allowed sites.
