4. Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the microscope and all components from the carrying case. Place the microscope on a stable, flat surface.
  2. Eyepiece Insertion: Insert the desired eyepieces (WF10x or WF25x) into the binocular head.
  3. Power Connection: Insert the small plug of the AC power adapter into the socket on the back of the microscope base. Plug the adapter into a standard electrical outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

  1. Eyepiece Adjustment: Adjust the interpupillary distance by moving the eyepiece tubes closer or further apart until a single circular field of view is observed. Adjust the diopter on one eyepiece for individual eye focus.
  2. Objective Lens Selection: Rotate the revolving nosepiece to select the desired objective lens (4x, 10x, 40x, 100x). Start with the lowest magnification (4x) for initial viewing.
  3. Stage Movement: Use the X-Y mechanical stage knobs to move the specimen slide left/right and forward/backward for precise positioning.
  4. Focusing: Use the coarse focus knob for large adjustments to bring the specimen into approximate focus. Use the fine focus knob for sharp, detailed focusing.
  5. Lighting Control: Turn on the dual LED lights using the switch on the base. Adjust the brightness using the dimmer control. The microscope features both top and bottom LED lights for versatile illumination.
  6. Color Filter Usage: The microscope includes a color filter wheel located beneath the stage. Rotate the wheel to select different colored filters (e.g., blue, yellow, pink) to enhance contrast for various specimens.
  7. Phone Adapter Usage: Attach the phone holder to one of the eyepieces. Secure your smartphone in the holder, aligning its camera lens with the eyepiece. Use your phone's camera app to view and capture images or videos of the magnified specimen. A Bluetooth remote is included for remote photo capture.
  8. Electronic Eyepiece (Optional): For computer viewing, remove one eyepiece and insert the electronic eyepiece. Connect the electronic eyepiece to your computer via the provided USB cable. Use compatible software on your computer to view the live feed from the microscope.

6. Preparing Slides

6.1 Preparing a Dry Mount

  1. Select a Clean Slide: Hold a slide up to a light source and look through to make sure it is free from smudges and dirt. If you find the slide has any contamination on it—including your own fingerprints—give it a quick wash with liquid soap and water. Dry the slide using a clean cloth. Do not use tissues or paper towels, as these can leave lint behind.
  2. Prepare the Specimen: Inspect the specimen to determine if it needs to be sliced. (The sample specimen needs to be translucent or transparent.) Use a razor blade to cut your specimen material into a thin, translucent slice. A dry mount is ideal for inspecting samples that are not at risk of drying out.
  3. Set a Cover Slip Over the Specimen: Use a pair of forceps to pick up the thin slice of your sample specimen, and then place a cover slip over the specimen.

6.2 Preparing a Wet Mount

  1. Drip Water on the Slide: Prepare a clean slide, and then place 1 drop of water onto the center of the slide.
  2. Place Specimen in the Water: Slice a section of wet sample specimen and use tweezers to transfer it to the water drop. Materials commonly used to make wet mounts include cheek cells or tooth plaque (use a toothpick), or a thin cross-section of a plant stem (use a razor blade).
  3. Set a Cover Slip Over the Specimen: Use a pair of forceps to pick up the thin slice of your sample specimen, and then place a cover slip over the specimen.
