What's in the Box
- 8 bags of KomeStone polishing grits (2 complete sets of Step 1-4)
- Each bag contains 30g of abrasive grit.
- Sufficient for tumbling and polishing up to 2 lbs of stones.
Setup and Initial Operation
Before starting the tumbling process, ensure your rock tumbler is clean and in good working order. This kit is designed for use with any rotary or vibratory rock tumbler.
- Prepare Rocks: Select rough rocks suitable for tumbling. Clean them thoroughly to remove any loose dirt or debris.
- Load Tumbler Barrel: Fill your tumbler barrel approximately 2/3 to 3/4 full with rocks. If you have fewer rocks, use ceramic media (not included in this kit) to fill the barrel to the recommended level.
- Add Grit (Step 1): Add one bag (30g) of "Step 1: Coarse 60 Grit" to the barrel.
- Add Water: Fill the barrel with water until the rocks are just covered. Ensure there is enough space for the rocks to tumble freely.
- Seal Barrel: Securely fasten the lid onto the tumbler barrel to prevent leaks.
- Place on Tumbler Base: Place the sealed barrel onto your rock tumbler base.
- Start Tumbling: Turn on your rock tumbler and set it to the appropriate speed and duration for the coarse grind cycle (typically 4-6 days, depending on rock hardness and desired shaping).

Operating Instructions: 4-Step Polishing Process
The KomeStone grit kit utilizes a 4-step process to achieve a smooth, polished finish. Each step uses a different grit size and requires thorough cleaning between cycles.

Image: Visual representation of the four grit steps: Step 1 (Coarse), Step 2 (Medium), Step 3 (Pre-Polish), and Step 4 (Final Polish).
Step 1: Coarse Grind (60 Grit Silicon Carbide)
- Purpose: Initial grinding and shaping of rough rocks, removing sharp edges and major imperfections.
- Grit: Use "Step 1: Coarse 60 Grit" (Silicon Carbide).
- Duration: Typically 4-6 days. Check rocks periodically.
- Speed: Use a higher speed setting on your tumbler.
Between Steps Cleaning Procedure:
- Empty Barrel: Carefully open the tumbler barrel and pour the contents (rocks, grit, and slurry) into a mesh strainer.
- Rinse Rocks: Rinse the rocks thoroughly under running water until all traces of the previous grit and slurry are removed. Ensure no grit remains in any crevices.
- Clean Barrel: Wash the inside of the tumbler barrel and lid with soap and water. It is crucial to remove all old grit particles to prevent contamination of the next polishing stage.
- Inspect Rocks: Examine your rocks. If they are not yet smooth enough, you may repeat the current step with fresh grit.
Step 2: Medium Grind (150 Grit Silicon Carbide)
- Purpose: Smoothing out the initial grind, removing scratches or cracks from the rock surface.
- Grit: Use "Step 2: Medium 150 Grit" (Silicon Carbide).
- Duration: Typically 6-8 days.
- Speed: Use a medium speed setting.
- Procedure: Follow the "Setup and Initial Operation" steps, replacing Step 1 grit with Step 2 grit.
Step 3: Pre-Polish (600 Grit Silicon Carbide)
- Purpose: Preparing the rocks for final polishing, developing a semi-glossy surface.
- Grit: Use "Step 3: Pre-Polish 600 Grit" (Silicon Carbide).
- Duration: Typically 6-8 days.
- Speed: Use a slower speed setting.
- Procedure: Follow the "Between Steps Cleaning Procedure" and then the "Setup and Initial Operation" steps, replacing Step 1 grit with Step 3 grit.
Step 4: Final Polish (1200 Grit Aluminum Oxide)
- Purpose: Adding a dazzling shine and a beautiful, smooth finish to your gemstones.
- Grit: Use "Step 4: Final Polish 1200 Grit" (Aluminum Oxide).
- Duration: Typically 7-9 days.
- Speed: Use the slowest speed setting for the best results.
- Procedure: Follow the "Between Steps Cleaning Procedure" and then the "Setup and Initial Operation" steps, replacing Step 1 grit with Step 4 grit.
After the final polish cycle, perform the "Between Steps Cleaning Procedure" one last time. Your rocks should now be beautifully polished!

Maintenance
- Cleanliness: Always ensure the tumbler barrel and base are clean and free of grit residue after each cycle to prevent cross-contamination and wear.
- Belt Inspection: Regularly inspect the drive belt for wear and tear. Replace worn belts promptly to maintain optimal tumbling performance. (Note: Some users have reported needing to replace belts periodically; contact support for replacements if needed).
- Lubrication: Refer to your specific tumbler's manual for any lubrication requirements for moving parts.
Troubleshooting
- Rocks not polishing: Ensure the barrel is filled to the correct level (2/3 to 3/4 full). Too few rocks or too many can hinder the tumbling action. Verify the correct grit is used for each stage and that cycles are run for the recommended duration.
- Excessive Noise: While KomeStone tumblers are designed for quiet operation, unusual noise may indicate an issue. Check the drive belt for proper tension and wear. Ensure the tumbler is on a stable surface.
- Leaking Barrel: Ensure the barrel lid is securely fastened and the rubber gasket is properly seated and free from damage.
