Setup

Unpacking and Contents

Carefully unpack all components from the packaging. Verify that all listed items are present and undamaged before proceeding with assembly.

Initial Assembly

1. Install HEPA Filters: Open the filter compartment and insert the two HEPA filter cartridges (3M 95259) securely into their designated slots. Ensure they are properly seated to prevent dust bypass.
2. Insert Poly Filter Bag: Place the poly filter bag (3M 95981) inside the main collection chamber. Ensure the opening of the bag aligns with the hose inlet.
3. Attach Conductive Hose: Connect the conductive hose (3M 95291) to the dust extractor's inlet port. Twist to secure the connection.
4. Attach Push Handle: Secure the push handle (3M 96804) to the designated mounting points on the extractor unit.
5. Power Connection: Plug the dust extractor into a suitable power outlet. Ensure the power supply meets the unit's requirements.

• Variable Flow Control: Adjusts the vacuum motor speed. Settings include:
  • 0: Off
  • I: Constant vacuum
  • I+: Constant vacuum with automatic filter clean
  • A+: Automatic vacuum with automatic filter clean (recommended for most sanding applications)
• Pneumatic Outlet for Tool: Connects to pneumatic sanding tools.
• Pneumatic Inlet for System Air: Provides air supply for pneumatic tools.
• Low Flow / System Fault Indicator: A red light indicates restricted suction or a system fault, often due to a clogged filter or full dust bag.
• Dust Cover for Electric Plug: Protects the electrical outlet when not in use.

Automatic On/Off Functionality

The 3M Xtract Portable Dust Extractor features an automatic ON/OFF function. When a compatible electric or pneumatic sander is connected to the extractor and powered on, the extractor will automatically start. When the sander is turned off, the extractor will also power down after a brief delay to clear any remaining dust from the hose.

Dust Extraction Process

For optimal dust extraction, connect the conductive hose from the extractor to your 3M Xtract Random Orbital Sander. The system is designed to extract up to 97% of the dust generated during sanding, significantly improving air quality and reducing cleanup time. The automatic filter cleaning system ensures continuous airflow without interruption during operation.

Filter Cleaning and Replacement

• The extractor features an automatic filter cleaning system. If the low flow indicator illuminates, manually activate the filter cleaning cycle if needed.
• Periodically inspect the HEPA filters for excessive buildup or damage. Replace filters (3M 95259) when they are visibly dirty or if suction performance significantly degrades despite automatic cleaning.
• To replace filters, ensure the unit is unplugged. Open the filter compartment, remove old filters, and insert new ones, ensuring a tight seal.

Emptying the Dust Bag

• Monitor the dust bag fill level. Empty the poly filter bag (3M 95981) when it is full to maintain optimal suction and prevent filter clogging.
• To empty, unplug the unit, open the main collection chamber, carefully remove the full bag, and dispose of contents responsibly. Replace with a new poly filter bag.

General Cleaning

• Wipe down the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
• Ensure the hose and connections are free from blockages.
