User Manual

1. Introduction

1.1 Product Overview

The Southwire 41300 Automatic Transfer Switch is designed to manage power transfer between a generator and shore power inputs to an RV load center. This 30 Amp, 120V, 60 Hz unit ensures seamless power transition, prioritizing generator power after a 30-second delay when both power sources are available. It conforms to the requirements of UL 1008 for safety and performance.

5. Installation and Setup

Proper installation is critical for the safe and effective operation of your automatic transfer switch. It is highly recommended that installation be performed by a qualified electrician or RV technician.

5.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Ensure all power sources (shore power, generator) are disconnected and locked out.
  • Verify that the installation location is dry, protected from the elements, and allows for proper ventilation.
  • Confirm that the wiring used meets the specified requirements.

5.2 Wiring Requirements

  • FOR FIELD WIRING, USE 75 °C COPPER WIRE ONLY.
  • USE 300V, NO. 10 AWG SUPPLY CONDUCTORS.
  • SUITABLE STRAIN RELIEF FOR CONDUCTORS SHALL BE PROVIDED AT INSTALLATION.
  • The unit must CONFORM TO REQUIREMENTS OF UL1008.

5.3 Installation Steps (General)

  1. Mount the transfer switch securely in the chosen location, ensuring the cover does not face down (parallel to earth).
  2. Connect the shore power input wiring to the designated terminals on the switch.
  3. Connect the generator power input wiring to the designated terminals on the switch.
  4. Connect the RV load center wiring to the output terminals of the switch.
  5. Ensure all connections are tight and secure, and proper strain relief is applied.
  6. Replace the cover and secure it.
  7. Restore power and test the operation of the switch.

6. Operation

The Southwire 41300 Automatic Transfer Switch operates automatically to manage your RV's power supply.

  • Shore Power Connection: When only shore power is available, the switch will connect the RV load center to the shore power input.
  • Generator Power Connection: When only generator power is available, the switch will connect the RV load center to the generator input.
  • Generator Dominance: If both shore power and generator power are present, the switch will automatically prioritize and transfer to generator power after a 30-second delay. This delay allows the generator to stabilize before the load is applied.
  • Loss of Generator Power: If the generator power is lost while it is the active source, the switch will automatically revert to shore power if it is available.

7. Maintenance

The Southwire 41300 Automatic Transfer Switch is designed for minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure continued safe and reliable operation.

  • Annual Inspection: Have a qualified technician inspect the unit annually.
  • Check Connections: Ensure all wiring connections remain tight and free from corrosion.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the area around the transfer switch clean and free of debris.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper airflow around the unit is maintained.

8. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your automatic transfer switch.

  • Unit is making a buzzing sound: Some level of operational hum or buzz can be normal for contactor-based transfer switches, especially when under load. If the buzzing is excessively loud or new, ensure all connections are secure. If the issue persists, consult a qualified technician.
  • No power output or unexpected power behavior:
    • Verify that both shore power and generator power sources are active and providing correct voltage.
    • Check circuit breakers on both the shore power pedestal/panel and the generator.
    • Confirm that the 30-second time delay has elapsed if switching to generator power.
    • Note that this switch is designed for generator dominance and active switching between sources, not for passive pass-through power. Both internal relays require power to close and maintain connection to the selected source.
  • Unit does not switch automatically:
    • Ensure both power sources are properly connected and supplying power.
    • Check for any loose wiring connections inside the unit (only by qualified personnel with power disconnected).
    • If the issue persists, the internal control board or contactors may require professional inspection.
