4. Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps to assemble your Blütezeit Worm Composter:

1. Prepare the Base: Place the base unit on a level surface. Attach the four anti-slip feet to the bottom of the base for stability.
2. Install the Spigot: Insert the spigot into the designated hole on the collection tray (the lowest tray with a tap). Ensure it is tightly secured to prevent leaks.
3. Stack the Trays: Place the collection tray onto the base. Then, stack the bedding tray (the first tray where worms will reside) directly on top of the collection tray.
4. Add Working Trays: Place the first working tray (Working Tray 1) on top of the bedding tray. You will add the second working tray (Working Tray 2) later, once the first tray is full.
5. Place the Lid: Secure the rain-proof lid on the topmost tray.

5. Setting Up Your Worm Farm

Once assembled, prepare your worm farm for its inhabitants:

1. Prepare Bedding: Rehydrate the coco-coir brick by adding water until it expands and becomes moist, like a wrung-out sponge. This provides a comfortable environment for the worms.
2. Add Bedding to Tray: Place the rehydrated coco-coir bedding into the bedding tray. You can also add shredded newspaper, cardboard, or dried leaves. Ensure the bedding is moist but not soaking wet.
3. Introduce Worms: Gently place your composting worms (e.g., Red Wigglers, European Nightcrawlers - worms are NOT included with this kit) onto the bedding. Leave the lid off for a short period (about 30 minutes) to encourage them to burrow down into the bedding away from light.
4. Initial Feeding: After the worms have settled, add a small amount of food scraps (see Section 6) to one corner of the bedding tray.

Proper feeding and management are crucial for a healthy worm farm.

What to Feed Your Worms:

• Fruit and vegetable scraps (excluding citrus in large quantities)
• Coffee grounds and tea bags (staples removed)
• Crushed eggshells (for grit)
• Shredded newspaper, cardboard, or non-glossy paper
• Garden waste (leaves, grass clippings - in moderation)

What to Avoid:

• Meat, bones, and dairy products (attract pests, create odors)
• Oily or greasy foods
• Citrus peels in large quantities (can be too acidic)
• Diseased plants
• Pet waste

Feeding Guidelines:

• Start Small: Begin with small amounts of food and gradually increase as your worm population grows.
• Bury Food: Always bury food scraps under the bedding to deter pests and reduce odors.
• Chop Food: Smaller pieces of food break down faster.
• Monitor: Wait until most of the previous feeding is consumed before adding more. Overfeeding can lead to odors and pests.

Moisture and Aeration:

• Maintain bedding moisture similar to a damp sponge. If too dry, lightly mist with water. If too wet, add dry shredded paper or cardboard.
• Periodically aerate the bedding with the provided turning fork to ensure good airflow and prevent compaction.
• Use the included Soil Meter to track moisture, pH, and light levels, ensuring optimal conditions for your worms.

7. Maintenance

Harvesting Worm Castings (Compost):

Once the first working tray is full and the contents resemble dark, earthy material, it's time to harvest. Worms will naturally migrate upwards to new food sources in higher trays. To harvest:

1. Add a new working tray on top of the full one and begin adding food scraps to the new tray.
2. After a few weeks, most worms will have moved to the upper tray. The bottom tray will contain rich worm castings.
3. Remove the bottom tray, empty the castings, and use them in your garden or potted plants.

Harvesting Worm Tea (Liquid Fertilizer):

The collection tray at the bottom will accumulate 'worm tea' (leachate), a nutrient-rich liquid. This can be drained using the spigot.

• Regularly drain the worm tea into the provided collection cup or another container.
• Dilute the worm tea with water (typically 1:10 ratio) before using it to water plants, as it can be very concentrated.

8. Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:

• Odors:
  Cause: Overfeeding, too much wet food, lack of aeration, or presence of anaerobic conditions.
  Solution: Reduce feeding, add more dry bedding (shredded paper/cardboard), aerate the bin with the turning fork, and ensure proper drainage.
• Fruit Flies:
  Cause: Exposed food scraps, too much moisture.
  Solution: Always bury food scraps completely under bedding. Add a layer of moist newspaper or cardboard on top of the food. Reduce moisture if necessary.
• Worms Escaping:
  Cause: Unfavorable conditions (too wet, too dry, too acidic, too much food, or new environment).
  Solution: Check moisture and pH levels with the soil meter. Ensure food is buried. Worms may try to escape when first introduced; they usually settle after a few days.
• Slow Composting:
  Cause: Not enough worms, food pieces too large, incorrect moisture, or temperature.
  Solution: Ensure adequate worm population. Chop food into smaller pieces. Maintain optimal moisture and temperature (worms prefer 55-77°F / 13-25°C).
