Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and safety. If you are unsure about any steps, consult a professional car audio installer.
Safety Precautions
- Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal before starting any electrical work.
- Ensure all wiring is properly insulated to prevent short circuits.
- Mount the amplifier securely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture.
- Use appropriate gauge wiring for power, ground, and speaker connections.
Mounting the Amplifier
Select a mounting location that allows for adequate airflow around the amplifier's heatsink. Use the provided screws to secure the amplifier to a solid surface in your vehicle. Ensure the mounting surface can support the amplifier's weight.
Wiring Connections
Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 6 for visual guidance on terminal locations.
- Power Connection (B+): Connect a fused power cable directly from the positive terminal of your vehicle's battery to the B+ terminal on the amplifier. The fuse should be located within 18 inches of the battery.
- Ground Connection (GND): Connect a short, heavy-gauge cable from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a good electrical connection.
- Remote Turn-On (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit (stereo) to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire signals the amplifier to turn on when the head unit is active.
- Audio Input (LOW INPUT): Connect RCA cables from the pre-out jacks of your head unit to the LOW INPUT jacks on the amplifier.
- Speaker Connections: Connect your speakers to the appropriate speaker terminals (FRONT SPEAKER, REAR SPEAKER). Observe correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). For bridged mode, refer to the amplifier's specific bridging instructions, typically indicated on the unit itself (see Figure 6 for "BRIDGED" markings).
Operating Instructions
Once installed, the amplifier can be configured for optimal audio performance.
Initial Power-Up
After all connections are made and verified, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery terminal. Turn on your head unit. The amplifier should power on automatically via the remote turn-on wire.
Adjusting Controls (Refer to Figure 3 and Figure 5)
- GAIN (Input Level): This control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output voltage of your head unit. Start with the GAIN set to minimum. Play a familiar piece of music at a moderate volume on your head unit. Slowly increase the GAIN until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly.
- CROSSOVER (LPF/HPF):
- LPF (Low Pass Filter): Allows only frequencies below the set point to pass through. Useful for subwoofers.
- HPF (High Pass Filter): Allows only frequencies above the set point to pass through. Useful for full-range speakers to prevent distortion from low bass.
- SUPER BASS: Adjusts the bass boost level. Use sparingly to avoid distortion.
- TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response.
Make small adjustments and listen carefully to the sound output to achieve your preferred audio balance.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and performance of your amplifier.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure the amplifier's heatsink fins are free from dust and debris to maintain proper cooling. Do not block any ventilation openings.
- Connections: Occasionally check all wiring connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your amplifier, consult the following table before seeking professional assistance.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power / Amplifier does not turn on | Blown fuse; Loose power/ground/remote wire; Faulty head unit remote output. | Check and replace fuse (see Figure 8 for fuse type); Verify all power, ground, and remote connections are secure; Test remote wire for 12V when head unit is on. |
| No Sound Output | Loose RCA cables; Incorrect speaker wiring; Amplifier in protection mode; Gain set too low. | Ensure RCA cables are securely connected; Check speaker wire polarity and connections; If protection light is on, check for short circuits in speaker wires or overheating; Increase GAIN setting gradually. |
| Distorted Sound | GAIN set too high; Speaker impedance mismatch; Damaged speakers. | Reduce GAIN setting; Verify speaker impedance matches amplifier's specifications; Test speakers individually. |
| Amplifier Overheats | Insufficient ventilation; Impedance too low; Prolonged high volume use. | Ensure proper airflow around the amplifier; Verify speaker impedance; Reduce volume or allow amplifier to cool down. |
