4. Operating Instructions: How to Play

The objective of Monopoly is to be the last player remaining with money, having driven all other players into bankruptcy.

Game Flow

  1. Starting the Game: Each player rolls the dice. The player with the highest roll goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
  2. Player's Turn: On your turn, roll both dice and move your token clockwise around the board the number of spaces indicated by the dice.
  3. Landing on Spaces:
    • Unowned Property: You may buy the property for the price printed on the board. If you decline, the property is auctioned off to the highest bidder.
    • Owned Property: If another player owns the property, you must pay rent to that player. Rent varies based on whether the property is part of a color set and if it has houses or hotels.
    • Chance or Community Chest: Draw the top card from the respective pile and follow its instructions.
    • Go to Jail: Move your token directly to the "In Jail" space. You do not collect $200 for passing GO.
    • Free Parking: This is a free resting space.
    • Income Tax/Luxury Tax: Pay the specified amount to the bank.
    • GO: If you pass or land on GO, collect $200 from the bank.
  4. Doubles: If you roll doubles, take your turn as usual, then roll again. If you roll doubles three times in a row, you immediately go to Jail.
  5. Building: Once you own all properties in a color group, you can build houses and then hotels on them during your turn or between turns. Houses must be built evenly across properties in a color group.
  6. Mortgaging: If you need money, you can mortgage properties. Mortgaged properties do not collect rent.
  7. Bankruptcy: If you owe more money than you can pay, even by mortgaging properties and selling houses/hotels, you are bankrupt and out of the game.
