  • AMP MODE: Selects the amplifier's operating mode (e.g., 2-Ch, 3-Ch, 5-Ch).
  • LEVELS: Adjusts the input sensitivity for each channel group (A, B, Sub).
  • HI PASS: High-pass filter frequency adjustment.
  • LO PASS: Low-pass filter frequency adjustment.
  • BOOST: Bass boost level adjustment.
  • SUBSONIC: Subsonic filter frequency adjustment for the subwoofer channel.
  • PHASE: Subwoofer phase control (0°/180°).

5. Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and safety of your amplifier. Ensure all connections are secure and correctly polarized.

5.1 Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that is:

  • Accessible for wiring and adjustments.
  • Protected from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
  • Allows for adequate air circulation around the amplifier's heatsink.
  • Secure from vibration and physical damage.

5.2 Wiring Connections

Refer to Figure 4.2 for connection points.

  1. Power (+12V): Connect a suitable gauge power cable directly from the positive terminal of the battery. Install an appropriate fuse (not supplied) within 18 inches of the battery.
  2. Ground (GND): Connect a cable of the same gauge as the power cable to a clean, solid metal point on the boat's chassis or a dedicated ground bus bar. Ensure a good electrical connection.
  3. Remote Turn-On (REM IN): Connect a wire from your head unit's remote output to the REM IN terminal.
  4. Audio Input (INPUT): Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-out to the corresponding INPUT terminals (L, R, SUB).
  5. Speaker Output (SPEAKER OUT): Connect your speakers to the SPEAKER OUT terminals, observing correct polarity (+ and -). Ensure the total impedance of connected speakers matches the amplifier's specifications.

6. Operating

Once installed, the amplifier requires proper configuration for optimal sound quality.

6.1 Initial Setup

  1. AMP MODE Selection: Set the AMP MODE switch (Figure 4.3) according to your speaker configuration (e.g., 5-channel for front, rear, and subwoofer speakers).
  2. Input Level Adjustment: Turn the LEVEL controls (Figure 4.3) to their minimum position. Play a familiar audio track at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's LEVEL control until you hear slight distortion, then back off slightly.
  3. Crossover Settings: Adjust the HI PASS, LO PASS, and SUBSONIC filters (Figure 4.3) to integrate your speakers and subwoofer smoothly. Typical settings for full-range speakers might be 80-100 Hz HI PASS, while subwoofers typically use a LO PASS filter around 80-120 Hz and a SUBSONIC filter around 20-30 Hz.
  4. Bass Boost: Use the BOOST control sparingly to enhance bass response if desired. Excessive boost can lead to distortion.
  5. Phase Control: For the subwoofer channel, experiment with the PHASE switch (0° or 180°) to achieve the best bass impact and integration with your main speakers.

7. Maintenance

The Hertz Venezia V5 is designed for marine environments with features like epoxy-coated PCB boards and IP64 protection. Regular maintenance ensures continued performance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the amplifier's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure ventilation fins are free from debris.
  • Connections: Regularly check all power, ground, and speaker connections for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can cause performance issues or damage.
  • Environmental Protection: While marine-grade, avoid prolonged exposure to direct saltwater spray. The IP64 rating protects against water jets, but not submersion.
  • Temperature: Ensure the amplifier has adequate ventilation to prevent overheating, especially during extended use at high volumes.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Power / Amplifier does not turn onBlown fuse; Loose power/ground/remote connection; Faulty wiring.Check the in-line fuse near the battery; Verify all power, ground, and remote turn-on connections are secure and correctly wired.
No Sound OutputNo audio input signal; Speaker wires disconnected; Amplifier in protection mode; Incorrect input level settings.Check RCA input cables; Verify speaker connections; Check amplifier status indicator (if available); Adjust input levels.
Distorted SoundInput level too high; Speaker impedance too low; Damaged speakers; Incorrect crossover settings.Reduce input level; Verify speaker impedance; Inspect speakers for damage; Adjust crossover settings.
Amplifier OverheatingInsufficient ventilation; Speaker impedance too low; Extended high-volume operation.Ensure adequate airflow around the amplifier; Verify speaker impedance; Reduce volume or allow amplifier to cool.
