Setup
Initial Winding
Your UMF RUHLA Romanus watch is equipped with an automatic ETA2824-2 movement. This means it is powered by the motion of your wrist. If the watch has stopped, it may require an initial manual wind to start the movement.
- Gently unscrew the crown located on the right side of the watch case (if it's a screw-down crown).
- With the crown in position 0 (fully pushed in), turn the crown clockwise approximately 20-30 times. This will build up a power reserve.
- The second hand should begin to move.
Setting Time and Date
- Setting the Date: Pull the crown out to position 1. Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this is when the date change mechanism is active and could be damaged.
- Setting the Time: Pull the crown out to position 2. Turn the crown to move the hands clockwise until the desired time is set. Ensure you differentiate between AM and PM when setting the time, especially if the date is also being set.
- Once the time and date are set, push the crown back into position 0. If it's a screw-down crown, gently screw it back in to ensure water resistance.
Adjusting the Leather Strap
The watch comes with a genuine handmade Horween leather bracelet. Adjust the buckle to a comfortable fit on your wrist. The strap should be snug enough to prevent excessive movement but not so tight as to restrict circulation.
Operating Your Watch
Automatic Movement
The ETA2824-2 is a self-winding mechanical movement. It winds itself through the natural motion of your arm. When worn daily, the watch should maintain its power reserve. If the watch is not worn for an extended period, it may stop and require manual winding as described in the "Setup" section.
Date Function
The watch features a date display at the 3 o'clock position. The date will automatically advance once every 24 hours. If the watch stops and restarts, or if the month has fewer than 31 days, the date may need to be manually adjusted using the crown in position 1.
Luminous Pointers
The watch hands are treated with a luminous material, allowing for readability in low-light conditions. Exposure to light will charge the luminous material, causing it to glow in the dark.
Maintenance and Care
Cleaning Your Watch
To maintain the appearance of your watch, wipe the case and sapphire glass with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. For the leather strap, avoid excessive moisture.
Leather Strap Care
The genuine Horween leather strap is durable but requires care. Avoid prolonged exposure to water, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures. If the strap gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat. Leather conditioners can be used periodically to maintain its suppleness.
Water Resistance
While the watch is designed for daily wear, its specific water resistance rating is not provided. It is generally recommended to avoid submerging the watch in water. Protect it from splashes and rain, and ensure the crown is fully screwed in (if applicable) to prevent water ingress.
Servicing
Mechanical watches, especially those with automatic movements like the ETA2824-2, benefit from periodic servicing to ensure accuracy and longevity. It is recommended to have your watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker every 3-5 years. This involves cleaning, lubricating, and regulating the movement.
Troubleshooting
- Watch Not Running: If the watch has stopped, it likely needs to be wound. Manually wind it 20-30 times using the crown in position 0. If it still does not start, ensure it is not exposed to strong magnetic fields.
- Date Not Changing: Check if the time is set correctly (AM/PM). The date changes around midnight. If the date is stuck, manually advance it using the crown in position 1. Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM.
- Time Inaccuracy: A slight deviation in timekeeping is normal for mechanical watches. However, if the watch is consistently gaining or losing significant time, it may require regulation by a professional watchmaker. Ensure the watch is fully wound.
- Condensation Under Glass: If you notice condensation inside the watch, this indicates moisture ingress. Immediately take the watch to a qualified watchmaker for inspection and repair to prevent damage to the movement.
