Installation

Wiring Diagram and Physical Installation

The UltraPro 700 Series dimmer features QuickFit and SimpleWire technologies for streamlined installation.

QuickFit Design

The QuickFit design reduces the housing depth by up to 20% and eliminates the need for heat tabs, making it suitable for older-style switch boxes or multi-gang configurations with limited space.

SimpleWire Technology

SimpleWire technology includes patented auto-detecting line/load terminals, which automatically identify the line and load wires, simplifying the wiring process. Dual, offset ground ports support daisy-chaining in multi-switch setups.

Wiring Steps (General)

  1. Turn off power: Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the switch box and turn it OFF. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove old switch: Carefully remove the existing switch from the wall box.
  3. Identify wires:
    • Line (Hot): Carries power from the circuit breaker.
    • Load: Carries power to the light fixture.
    • Neutral: Provides a return path for current (required for this dimmer).
    • Ground: Safety wire.
    • Traveler (for 3-way/multi-switch): Connects to an add-on switch.
  4. Connect wires: Connect the wires to the UltraPro dimmer terminals as shown in the SimpleWire diagram. The dimmer's auto-detecting terminals will identify Line/Load.
  5. Secure dimmer: Mount the dimmer into the wall box using the provided screws.
  6. Install wallplate: Attach the wallplate (sold separately).
  7. Restore power: Turn the power back ON at the circuit breaker.

For 3-way or multi-switch installations, an UltraPro add-on switch (sold separately) is required. The dimmer supports control from up to five locations.

Setup (Z-Wave Pairing)

Pairing with a Z-Wave Hub

This UltraPro dimmer utilizes Z-Wave Plus and 700 Series technology, offering enhanced security (S2) and simplified pairing (SmartStart).

SmartStart Inclusion

SmartStart-enabled products can be added to a Z-Wave network by scanning the Z-Wave QR Code present on the product or packaging with a controller providing SmartStart inclusion. No further action is required, and the SmartStart product will be added automatically within 10 minutes of being switched on in the network vicinity.

  2. Press the top or bottom of the rocker switch once.
  3. The LED indicator on the dimmer will flash to confirm inclusion.
  4. If successful, the dimmer will appear on your Z-Wave controller's device list.

Exclusion (Removing from Z-Wave Network)

  1. Place your Z-Wave controller into exclusion (removal) mode.
  2. Press the top or bottom of the rocker switch once.
  3. The LED indicator will flash to confirm exclusion.

Ensure the dimmer is not exposed to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures outside its operating range (32°F to 104°F).

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Light does not turn ON/OFF:
    • Check the circuit breaker.
    • Verify wiring connections are secure.
    • Ensure the bulb is dimmable and functioning.
  • Dimmer does not respond to Z-Wave commands:
    • Ensure the dimmer is within range of your Z-Wave hub.
    • Try re-pairing the dimmer with your Z-Wave hub.
    • Check your Z-Wave hub's status and network.
  • Difficulty connecting to SmartThings hub:
    • If standard instructions fail, consult the manufacturer's support or your hub's specific pairing guide. Sometimes, specific hub models require alternative pairing sequences.
  • Slow response when turning off/on:
    • This can sometimes be a characteristic of certain Z-Wave dimmers or hub configurations. Ensure your Z-Wave network has good signal strength and minimal interference.
    • Check if your hub or dimmer settings allow adjustment of fade on/off times. Disabling dimming completely might remove fade effects if that is the cause.
  • Dimmer does not dim properly:
    • Confirm the connected bulb is a dimmable type (LED, CFL, or incandescent).
    • Some dimmable LEDs require specific dimmer types or have a limited dimming range.
