1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective use of your Coleman Northstar 1500 Lumens Propane Gas Lantern. 2. Important Safety Information

Failure to follow these instructions could result in fire, explosion, serious injury, or death.

• FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY: Never operate this appliance inside any house, camper, tent, vehicle, or other unventilated or enclosed area. This appliance consumes oxygen and can produce carbon monoxide, which is odorless and can cause death.
• PROPANE GAS WARNING: Use only 16.4 oz. propane cylinders. Do not use any other fuel. Propane is flammable and explosive.
• LEAK CHECK: Always check for leaks after connecting the propane cylinder. Apply soapy water to connections; bubbles indicate a leak. Do not use if a leak is detected.
• HOT SURFACES: The lantern becomes extremely hot during operation and remains hot for some time after use. Allow to cool completely before handling or storing.
• MANTLE CARE: Mantles are fragile. Handle with care. Replace damaged mantles before use.
• KEEP AWAY FROM COMBUSTIBLES: Maintain a safe distance from flammable materials, including tents, sleeping bags, and dry vegetation.
• CHILDREN AND PETS: Keep children and pets away from the lantern during operation and while it is cooling.
• STABILITY: Ensure the lantern is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping. Use the collapsible footed base for added stability.

4. Setup

4.1 Attaching the Propane Cylinder

1. Ensure the lantern's control knob is in the "OFF" position.
2. Place the lantern on a stable, level surface.
3. Thread a 16.4 oz. propane cylinder (sold separately) clockwise into the base of the lantern until hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
4. Perform a leak check as described in the Safety Information section.

4.2 Installing/Replacing Mantles

The lantern uses Insta-Clip #95 mantles. If your mantle is damaged or needs replacement, follow these steps:

1. Ensure the lantern is cool and disconnected from the propane cylinder.
2. Remove the top ventilator and glass globe by lifting the wire bail and unhooking the clips.
3. If replacing, carefully remove the old mantle.
4. Hold a new Insta-Clip #95 mantle (see image below) and clip it onto the burner assembly.

5. Once clipped, gently remove the green plastic clips (see image below).

6. Replace the glass globe and top ventilator.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Lighting the Lantern

1. Ensure the propane cylinder is securely attached and the mantle is properly installed.
2. Slowly turn the control knob counter-clockwise to the "LIGHT" position (see image below). You should hear the gas flowing.
3. Immediately press the red Instastart push-button igniter repeatedly until the mantle lights.
4. If the mantle does not light after several attempts, turn the control knob to "OFF", wait 5 minutes, and repeat the process. If manual lighting is required, use a long-stem lighter or match through the designated port.

5.2 Adjusting Brightness

Once lit, rotate the control knob clockwise to increase brightness or counter-clockwise to decrease brightness. The lantern offers up to 1500 lumens on high and 300 lumens on low.

5.3 Turning Off the Lantern

To turn off the lantern, rotate the control knob clockwise until it clicks into the "OFF" position. The flame will extinguish.

6.1 Mantle Replacement

Refer to section 4.2 for detailed instructions on installing and replacing mantles. Always ensure the lantern is cool before handling mantles.

6.2 Cleaning the Glass Globe

Allow the lantern to cool completely. Remove the top ventilator and glass globe. Clean the glass globe with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reassembling. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the glass.

6.3 Storage

Before storing, ensure the lantern is completely cool and disconnected from the propane cylinder. Store the lantern in its included carry case or a protective container in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The collapsible footed base can be folded for compact storage.

7. Troubleshooting

If your Coleman Northstar lantern is not performing as expected, consult the following common issues and solutions:

• Lantern does not light:
  • Ensure propane cylinder is securely attached and not empty.
  • Check if the control knob is turned to the "LIGHT" position.
  • Verify the mantle is intact and properly installed. Replace if damaged.
  • If the Instastart igniter is not sparking, try manual lighting through the designated port.
• Light is dim or flickering:
  • The propane cylinder may be low or nearly empty. Replace with a new one.
  • The mantle may be damaged or old. Replace the mantle.
  • Ensure the control knob is fully open for maximum brightness.
  • The PerfectFlow pressure regulator ensures consistent performance, but extreme cold can affect gas flow.
• Gas smell detected:
  • Immediately turn off the lantern and disconnect the propane cylinder.
  • Perform a leak check with soapy water on all connections.
  • If a leak persists, do not use the lantern and contact Coleman customer support.
