5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

Both the Transmitter and Receiver require one 9V 6LR61 battery each. Batteries are included in the package.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of both the Transmitter and Receiver.
  2. Use a small screwdriver (if necessary) to open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert one 9V battery into each unit, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

5.2. Initial Checks

  • Ensure both units power on by pressing their respective power buttons. The power indicator light should illuminate.
  • Test the LED flashlight on the receiver.
  • Connect the earphones to the receiver's headphone jack and test sound reception.

6. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to effectively use the VXSCAN F04 for locating underground cables and faults.

6.1. Preparing the Cable for Testing

  • Crucial Safety Step: Ensure the cable to be tested is completely de-energized (neutral). Disconnect it from any power source.
  • For single-strand wires or two parallel wires, the device will function optimally. It is not designed for twisted pair wires.

6.2. Connecting the Transmitter

  1. Connect the red clip of the transmitter to the cable you wish to trace.
  2. Connect the black clip of the transmitter to a suitable ground point. This can be a metal stake inserted into the earth or another reliable ground connection.
  3. Turn on the transmitter by pressing its power switch button.
  4. Press the Signal Emission Key on the transmitter. A signal will be emitted, and the transmitting signal indicator lamp should light up.

Figure 4: Illustration of connecting the transmitter. The red clip is connected to the cable, and the black clip is inserted into the ground. The receiver is shown detecting the signal.

6.3. Using the Receiver to Locate Cables and Faults

  1. Turn on the receiver by pressing its power switch button.
  2. Adjust the volume using the volume keys and consider using the earphones for clearer sound, especially in noisy environments.
  3. Hold the receiver with the probe pointing towards the ground, moving it along the suspected path of the cable.
  4. Observe the transmitting signal indicator lamp on the receiver and listen for the signal sound. The signal strength will be strongest directly over the cable.
  5. To locate a cable break:
    • Follow the cable path until the signal significantly weakens or disappears. This indicates a potential break point.
    • Move the receiver slowly and methodically to pinpoint the exact location where the signal stops.
  6. To determine cable depth: The receiver's display provides an indication of the approximate depth of the wire before you dig.
