1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective setup, operation, and maintenance of your Swagman XTC2 TILT Hitch Mount Bike Rack. Please read all instructions carefully before assembly and use.

The Swagman XTC2 TILT is designed to transport up to two bicycles, fitting 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers (Class 2 or higher). It features a tilting mechanism for convenient vehicle access and adjustable wheel trays for various bike sizes.

Important Safety Note: The XTC2 TILT is not recommended for use with carbon frames. Always ensure all components are securely fastened before transport.

2.1. Unpacking and Components

Verify that all components are present:

  • Bolts and accessories for assembly
  • 1-1/4" receiver bar and 2" adapter plate

2.2. Assembly Instructions

The XTC2 TILT is designed for quick assembly. Follow the detailed instructions provided with your product packaging for specific steps. Key assembly points include:

  1. Attach the main rack assembly to the appropriate hitch receiver bar (1-1/4" or with the 2" adapter plate).
  2. Secure the rack to your vehicle's hitch using the anti-wobble hitch pin. Ensure it is tightened sufficiently to minimize movement.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Loading Bicycles

To ensure secure transport and prevent damage, proper bike loading is crucial:

  1. Adjust Wheel Trays: Before placing bikes, pre-position the adjustable wheel trays to align with your bicycle's wheelbase. The trays are curved towards the center of the rack to provide maximum adjustability.
  2. Place Bicycle: Lift your bicycle onto the rack, ensuring its wheels rest securely in the adjusted trays.
  3. Secure Frame: Lower the soft, frame-friendly grip arms (ratcheting hooks) onto the bicycle's top tube. Ensure the hook is in the lowest possible position on the top tube to prevent movement during transit. If the hook cannot reach the lowest position due to bike frame design, consider swapping bike positions or using a bar adapter (sold separately).
  4. Strap Wheels: Use the integrated straps to secure both wheels to the trays.

Caution: Ensure the frame contact hook is always in the lowest possible position on the bike's top tube. Failure to do so can lead to excessive stress on the wheel trays and potential dislodgement of the bike.

The XTC2 TILT is not designed to accept standard padlocks for securing bikes. For enhanced security, consider purchasing the Swagman Anti-Wobble Threaded Hitch Pin & Cable (Model 64031) or a 1/2" Locking Hitch Pin (Model 64029), sold separately.

3.2. Tilting Feature

The rack features a convenient tilting mechanism to allow access to the rear of your vehicle, even with bikes loaded.

  1. Locate the tilt release mechanism at the base of the rack.
  2. Engage the release and carefully tilt the rack downwards, away from the vehicle.
  3. Once access is no longer needed, lift the rack back into its upright position until it securely locks into place.

3.3. Folding for Storage

When not in use, the rack can be folded up for compact storage or to reduce its profile on the vehicle.

  1. Ensure no bikes are loaded on the rack.
  2. Release the horizontal support arms and fold them upwards.
  3. The center arm also folds down for easy storage.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your bike rack:

  • Cleaning: Clean the rack periodically with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the finish or rubber components.
  • Inspection: Before each use, inspect all bolts, pins, straps, and moving parts for wear, damage, or looseness. Tighten any loose fasteners.
  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of lubricant to moving joints and pivot points as needed to ensure smooth operation.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Swagman XTC2 TILT, consider the following:

  • Bike Wobble: Ensure the anti-wobble hitch pin is fully tightened. Verify that the frame contact hook is lowered to the lowest possible position on the bike's top tube. Improper wheel tray adjustment can also contribute to wobble.
  • Difficulty Securing Bikes: If the frame contact hook cannot properly engage the bike's top tube (common with step-through frames), consider purchasing a Swagman bar adapter (sold separately) to create a virtual top tube.
  • Rack Not Tilting Smoothly: Check for any obstructions in the tilting mechanism. Ensure the release lever is fully engaged. Lubricate pivot points if necessary.
