5. Setup and Installation

This section outlines the general steps for installing your Hertz HSP1 kit. Refer to the fitment diagram and consult a professional installer if you are unsure about any steps.

5.1 Pre-Installation Checks

  1. Read the entire manual before starting.
  2. Ensure the vehicle's battery is disconnected.
  3. Gather all necessary tools (screwdrivers, wire strippers, crimpers, multimeter, etc.).
  4. Identify suitable mounting locations for the amplifier and speakers, ensuring proper ventilation for the amplifier.

5.2 Component Installation

The Hertz HSP1 kit is designed for a plug-and-play installation, particularly with the HTHP13 T-Power Harness. The following steps are general guidelines:

  1. Speaker Installation:
    • Carefully remove the existing front speakers from your vehicle.
    • Mount the new Hertz SX 165 NEO Coaxial Speakers in the designated locations. Ensure a secure fit.
    • Connect the speaker wires. The HTHP13 harness will simplify these connections.
  2. Amplifier Mounting:
    • Mount the SP4.900 amplifier using its dedicated mounting bracket in a secure and well-ventilated area. Common locations include under a seat or within a fairing.
  3. Wiring with HTHP13 T-Power Harness:
    • Connect the HTHP13 T-Power Harness to the vehicle's head unit and the SP4.900 amplifier. This harness is designed to integrate seamlessly with your vehicle's existing wiring.
    • Connect the speaker outputs from the amplifier to the SX 165 NEO speakers using the harness.
    • Ensure all power and ground connections are secure and properly fused.

5.3 Post-Installation Checks

  1. Double-check all connections for tightness and correct polarity.
  2. Ensure no wires are pinched or exposed.
  3. Reconnect the vehicle's battery.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the Hertz HSP1 system is ready for operation. The SP4.900 amplifier offers several adjustments to fine-tune your audio experience.

6.1 Initial Power-Up

  1. Turn on your vehicle's ignition and head unit.
  2. The amplifier should power on, indicated by its status LED.
  3. Start with the head unit volume at a low level.

6.2 Amplifier Adjustments (SP4.900)

The SP4.900 amplifier features controls for input level, gain, and crossover settings. These controls are typically located on the side panel of the amplifier.

  • Input Level (HI/LO): Select the appropriate input level based on your head unit's output. The HTHP13 harness is designed for optimal integration.
  • Gain Control (INPUT LEVEL GAIN): Adjust this setting to match the output of your head unit. Start with the gain at minimum and slowly increase it until you achieve clear, undistorted sound at your desired maximum volume. Avoid setting the gain too high, as this can introduce distortion.
  • Crossover Settings (FULL LP HP): The amplifier includes adjustable high-pass (HP) and low-pass (LP) filters. For full-range coaxial speakers like the SX 165 NEO, a full-range setting or a high-pass filter set around 80-100 Hz is often recommended to protect the speakers from low-frequency distortion.
  • B.BOOST: Bass boost control. Use sparingly and adjust carefully to avoid distortion.

Note: Make small adjustments and listen carefully to the sound quality after each change. Optimal settings will vary based on your vehicle, personal preference, and music type.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Hertz HSP1 system.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the amplifier and speakers. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the amplifier's cooling fins remain free of dust and debris to maintain proper heat dissipation.
  • Wiring Checks: Periodically inspect all wiring connections for any signs of wear, corrosion, or looseness. Tighten connections as needed.
  • Environmental Protection: Protect components from extreme temperatures, moisture, and direct sunlight, especially if installed in exposed areas.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Hertz HSP1 system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound
  • Power cable disconnected
  • Blown fuse
  • Speaker wires disconnected or shorted
  • Head unit not sending signal
  • Amplifier in protection mode
  • Check power and ground connections
  • Inspect and replace fuses if necessary
  • Verify speaker wire connections and check for shorts
  • Ensure head unit is on and outputting audio
  • Check amplifier status LED; if in protection, troubleshoot cause (e.g., overheating, short circuit)
Distorted Sound
  • Gain set too high
  • Crossover settings incorrect
  • Damaged speaker
  • Poor signal quality from head unit
  • Reduce amplifier gain
  • Adjust crossover settings (e.g., increase HP filter frequency)
  • Inspect speakers for physical damage
  • Check head unit output and wiring
Amplifier Overheating
  • Insufficient ventilation
  • Improper impedance load
  • Prolonged high volume use
  • Ensure amplifier has clear airflow
  • Verify speaker impedance matches amplifier specifications
  • Reduce volume or allow amplifier to cool down
Intermittent Sound
  • Loose wiring connection
  • Faulty cable
  • Vibration issues
  • Check all power, ground, and speaker connections
  • Inspect cables for damage
  • Securely mount all components

If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, contact Hertz customer support or a qualified audio technician.
