Important Placement Considerations:

  • Do not place the device in areas where humidity can consistently exceed 85%, such as bathrooms, as this can cause permanent damage to the radon sensor.
  • Avoid placing the device directly in front of or too close to air vents, windows, or doors, as this can skew readings.

4. Operation

4.1. Checking Air Quality

The Airthings Wave Plus offers two primary ways to check your air quality:

  • Wave Gesture: Simply wave your hand in front of the device. A color-coded light ring will illuminate to give you an immediate visual indication of your overall air quality:
    • Green: Good air quality
    • Yellow: Fair air quality, consider ventilation
    • Red: Poor air quality, immediate action recommended
  • Airthings App: For detailed insights and historical data, open the Airthings app on your smartphone. The app provides precise readings for each sensor, along with graphs showing trends over time.

4.2. Sensor Calibration and Accuracy

Upon initial setup, some sensors require an adjustment period to reach full accuracy:

  • Air pressure, temperature, and humidity readings are ready from day 1.
  • VOC and CO2 sensors will adjust to the room's environment during the first week. You might notice some erratic readings initially; this is normal. After the first week, these sensors are calibrated and readings become accurate.
  • For radon levels, long-term average is important. Radon levels naturally fluctuate over time. Airthings Wave Plus takes a measurement every 60 minutes. These measurements are combined into 24-hour averages, which are then used to calculate averages for longer periods, up to 12 months. It is recommended to wait for at least 30 days before considering action based on your home's radon readings to ensure a reliable long-term average.

4.3. App Features

The Airthings app provides a comprehensive interface for managing your device and understanding your air quality:

  • Analyze trends with dynamic graphs for all measured parameters.
  • Turn notifications on or off for alerts on high levels.
  • Check local pollen levels (if available in your region).
  • Add new monitors to your account.
  • Access the Airthings resource center for more information.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Battery Replacement

The Airthings Wave Plus is powered by two AA batteries. The app will notify you when the battery level is low. To replace the batteries, follow the steps outlined in the "Battery Installation" section (3.1).

5.2. Cleaning

To clean your Airthings Wave Plus, gently wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or immerse the device in water.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Erratic Readings: During the first week of operation, especially for VOC and CO2 sensors, readings might be erratic. This is part of the calibration process. Allow the device to adjust to its environment for at least one week.
  • No Data in App: Ensure your phone's Bluetooth is on and you are within range of the device. Check if the batteries are properly installed and have sufficient charge.
  • Radon Readings Seem High/Low: Radon levels fluctuate naturally. Rely on the long-term average (30 days or more) for accurate assessment. Ensure the device is placed correctly, away from drafts and high humidity.
