1. Introduction

The Suchtale 40-Inch Tow Behind Plug Aerator is designed to improve the health and appearance of your lawn, farm, or garden. It features 24 heat-treated coring plugs that penetrate compacted soil up to 2 inches deep, allowing water, seeds, and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively. Assembly Steps:

  1. Step 1: Attach Side Brackets to the Main Tray
Secure the four small L-shaped brackets to the main tray using four M8x20 screws (part B). Ensure they are positioned correctly as shown in the video before tightening.
  2. Step 2: Install the V-shaped Support Bars
Attach the two V-shaped support bars to the previously installed L-brackets using four M8x20 screws (part B). Do not fully tighten these screws yet; leave approximately 0.6 inches of space for adjustment.
  3. Step 3: Connect the Tow Bar Sections
Assemble the two main sections of the tow bar using two M10x35 screws (part F). Again, do not fully tighten, reserving about 0.6 inches of space.
  4. Step 4: Attach Tow Bar Extension Plates
Connect the two flat extension plates to the tow bar assembly using two M10x55 screws (part G) and one pin (part H). Pay close attention to the orientation and installation position of the screws. Once aligned, tighten all screws from steps 2, 3, and 4.
  5. Step 5: Install Side Panels (Left)
Attach the left side panel to the main tray using one M8x15 screw (part C) and one M8x15 screw (part D).
  6. Step 6: Secure Left Side Panel to Main Tray
Fasten the left side panel to the main tray using five M8x20 screws (part B). Tighten these screws securely.
  7. Step 7: Assemble Aerator Tines
Attach the 24 heat-treated aerator plugs to the six individual shafts using M8x20 screws (part B). Align the holes precisely and tighten all screws.
  8. Step 8: Install Cantilever Transport Handle Brackets
Attach the two cantilever transport handle brackets to the main tray using two M8x20 screws (part B). Tighten these screws.
  9. Step 9: Insert Aerator Shafts
Carefully slide the assembled aerator shafts (from Step 7) into the designated slots on the main frame. Ensure they are properly aligned and seated.
  10. Step 10: Install Side Panels (Right)
Attach the right side panel to the main tray using five M8x20 screws (part B), mirroring the installation of the left side panel. Tighten these screws securely.
  11. Step 11: Attach Cantilever Transport Handle
Connect the cantilever transport handle to its brackets using one M6x40 screw (part E) and one washer (part A). Tighten the screw.
  12. Step 12: Attach Tow Bar to Main Frame
Secure the tow bar assembly to the main frame using one M6x40 screw (part E) and one washer (part A). Tighten this screw.
  13. Step 13: Install Wheels

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Attaching to a Towing Vehicle

The aerator features a 2-piece steel draw bar with a universal hitch pin. Simply connect this pin to the hitch point of your lawn tractor, ATV, or riding lawn mower. No additional equipment is necessary for hitching or removal.

5.2 Adding Weight for Soil Penetration

The aerator includes an all-steel weight tray designed to hold up to 125 pounds of additional weight. For increased soil penetration, place concrete blocks or other suitable weights onto this tray. The robust wheel structure with bearings supports the added load.

5.3 Engaging and Disengaging Aeration

Use the cantilever transport handle to easily raise and lower the aerator plugs. Raise the plugs when crossing driveways, walkways, or other areas where aeration is not desired. Lower the plugs to engage the aerator tines with the soil.

5.4 Aeration Process

Drive your towing vehicle at a consistent, appropriate speed across your lawn. The 24 heat-treated plugs will extract soil cores, creating channels for air, water, and nutrients. Each plug is designed to penetrate up to 2 inches in depth. For optimal results, aerate when the soil is moist but not waterlogged.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Suchtale Tow Behind Plug Aerator.

  • Cleaning: After each use, remove any accumulated soil, grass, or debris from the aerator tines and frame. A stiff brush or hose can be used.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all bolts, nuts, and pins for tightness. Tighten any loose fasteners. Check the aerator tines for wear or damage; replace if necessary.
  • Lubrication: Apply a light coat of lubricant to moving parts, such as the axle and pivot points, to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.
  • Storage: Store the aerator in a dry, covered area to protect it from the elements when not in use. Ensure the plugs are raised during storage to prevent damage.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your aerator, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • Insufficient Soil Penetration:
Solution: Ensure the soil is adequately moist. Add more weight to the weight tray (up to 125 lbs) to increase penetration depth. Check for any obstructions or debris preventing the tines from fully engaging.
  • Uneven Aeration:
Solution: Verify that the aerator is properly hitched and level with the ground. Ensure the towing vehicle is driven at a consistent speed. Check for bent or damaged tines that may cause uneven penetration.
  • Difficulty Raising/Lowering Plugs:
Solution: Inspect the cantilever transport handle mechanism for any obstructions or damage. Lubricate pivot points if movement is stiff.
  • Loose Parts/Excessive Wobble:
Solution: Re-check all assembly bolts and nuts, ensuring they are tightened to the recommended specifications. Inspect the wheels and axle for proper installation and secure fastening.
