3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the radio is powered off.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  3. Carefully open the cover.
  4. Insert the NiMH battery pack, ensuring correct polarity.
  5. Securely close the battery compartment cover to maintain the waterproof seal.

3.2 Charging the Battery

The KSUN P25 radio can be charged using the provided USB cable, AC power adapter, or car charger. The charging port is sealed to prevent water ingress. Ensure the port cover is securely closed after charging.

  1. Open the rubber cover of the charging port located on the top of the radio.
  2. Connect the charging cable to the radio and to a power source (AC adapter, car charger, or USB port).
  3. The battery indicator on the LCD will show charging status.
  4. Once fully charged, disconnect the cable and firmly close the rubber cover to maintain waterproofing.

3.3 Antenna and Belt Clip Attachment

  • Antenna: Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.
  • Belt Clip: Attach the belt clip to the designated slot on the back of the radio by sliding it down until it clicks into place.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

  • Power On: Press and hold the Power button (Power button icon) until the LCD screen illuminates.
  • Power Off: Press and hold the Power button until the screen turns off.

4.2 Volume and Squelch Adjustment

  • Volume: Use the VOL/SQL button and the Up/Down arrow keys to adjust the speaker volume.
  • Squelch: Press the VOL/SQL button briefly, then use the Up/Down arrow keys to set the squelch level. Squelch eliminates background noise when no signal is received.

4.3 Channel Selection and Group Switching

The radio supports US, Canadian, and International marine channel groups. You can switch between these groups and select specific channels.

  1. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to navigate through available channels.
  2. To switch channel groups (USA, INT, CAN), press the MENU button and follow the on-screen prompts.

4.4 NOAA Weather Channels

The KSUN P25 provides access to 10 NOAA weather channels for real-time weather information and alerts.

  1. Press the dedicated WX button (if available) or navigate through the menu to access weather channels.
  2. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select a NOAA weather channel for your region.

4.5 Transmitting and Receiving

  • Receiving: The radio will automatically receive signals on the selected channel.
  • Transmitting: Press and hold the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to listen.

4.6 Automatic Drainage Function

The radio features an automatic drainage function to expel water from the speaker grille, ensuring clear audio after exposure to water.

  • If the speaker sounds muffled after water exposure, activate the drainage function via the menu or a dedicated button (refer to the LCD display for specific prompts).
  • The radio will emit a specific tone to vibrate and expel water.

4.7 Flashing Light Function

In the event the radio is accidentally dropped into water, its built-in flashing light will automatically activate, aiding in quick retrieval.

4.8 LCD Display Overview

The 1.57-inch LCD display provides essential information at a glance.

  • TX/BUSY: Indicates transmit or receive status.
  • LOW: Indicates low power output.
  • Battery Icon: Shows current battery level.
  • Channel Number: Displays the currently selected channel.
  • Channel Group Icon: Indicates US, CAN, or INT channel group.
  • WX: Indicates NOAA weather channel mode.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps maintain the radio's performance and appearance.

  • Wipe the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ensure the charging port cover and battery compartment seal are free of dirt and debris.

5.2 Battery Care

  • Charge the battery fully before first use.
  • Avoid overcharging or completely draining the battery to prolong its lifespan.
  • Store the radio and battery in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.

5.3 Waterproof Seal Inspection

Periodically inspect the rubber seals around the battery compartment and charging port for any signs of wear or damage. A compromised seal can affect the radio's waterproof integrity.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Radio does not power on: Ensure the battery is correctly installed and fully charged.
  • Cannot transmit or receive: Check that the antenna is securely attached and you are on an active channel. Verify volume and squelch settings.
  • Poor audio quality: If recently exposed to water, activate the automatic drainage function. Check for debris in the speaker grille.
  • Battery not charging: Ensure the charging cable is properly connected and the power source is active. Inspect the charging port for damage.
