General Safety Rules:

  • Wear Eye Protection: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields.
  • Secure Workpiece: Always clamp the workpiece firmly to the drill press table. Never hold it by hand.
  • Proper Attire: Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, or jewelry that can get caught in moving parts. Tie back long hair.
  • Clear Work Area: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Unplug Before Adjustments: Always disconnect the drill press from the power source before making adjustments, changing accessories, or performing maintenance.
  • Avoid Overreaching: Maintain proper footing and balance at all times.
  • Use Correct Bit: Ensure the drill bit is sharp, clean, and suitable for the material being drilled.
  • Never Force Tool: Allow the tool to work at its intended speed. Forcing can cause injury or damage.

4. Assembly and Setup

Follow these steps for initial assembly and setup:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
  2. Mounting the Column: Securely attach the column to the base using the provided hardware. Ensure it is stable and upright.
  3. Attaching the Head Assembly: Carefully lower the head assembly onto the top of the column. Tighten all securing bolts.
  4. Installing the Work Table: Slide the work table onto the column and secure it at a comfortable working height.
  5. Installing the Chuck: Clean the tapered shaft of the chuck and the spindle. Firmly push the chuck onto the spindle.
  6. Power Connection: Connect the drill press to a grounded power outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before plugging in.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Installing a Drill Bit

  1. Ensure the drill press is unplugged.
  2. Insert the drill bit into the chuck jaws.
  3. Use the chuck key to tighten the chuck jaws securely around the drill bit. Tighten in all three keyholes for even pressure.
  4. Remove the chuck key immediately after tightening.

5.2 Securing the Workpiece

Always clamp the workpiece firmly to the drill press table. This prevents the workpiece from spinning, which can cause injury or damage to the drill bit and material.

5.3 Adjusting Drilling Depth

The drilling depth can be set using the depth stop rod. Loosen the depth stop lock, adjust the rod to the desired depth, and then tighten the lock.

5.4 Starting and Stopping

  • To start, press the green ON button.
  • To stop, press the red OFF button.

5.5 Using the Feed Handle

Apply steady, even pressure to the feed handle to lower the drill bit into the workpiece. Avoid excessive force, which can cause the bit to bind or break.

6. EXACTLINE Alignment System

The EXACTLINE Alignment System projects a laser crosshair onto the workpiece, indicating the exact point where the drill bit will enter the material. This feature assists in precise hole placement.

  • Activation: The laser can be activated via a dedicated switch on the head assembly.
  • Adjustment: If the laser crosshair does not align with the drill bit, refer to the adjustment instructions in the full manual (if provided) or contact customer support.

7. Speed Adjustment

This drill press offers 5 distinct speeds, with a maximum speed of 3100 RPM. Speed adjustments are typically made by changing the belt position on the motor and spindle pulleys located under the top cover.

  1. Unplug the drill press.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Loosen the motor tensioning bolt.
  4. Move the drive belt to the desired pulley combination for the required speed. A speed chart is usually located inside the top cover.
  5. Retension the motor and close the cover.

Refer to the speed chart on the inside of the pulley cover for recommended speeds for different materials and drill bit sizes.

8. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your drill press.

  • Cleaning: Keep the machine clean and free of dust and debris. Use a vacuum or compressed air.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a light coat of machine oil to moving parts, such as the column and quill.
  • Belt Inspection: Check the drive belt for wear, cracks, or stretching. Replace if necessary.
  • Chuck Care: Keep the chuck jaws clean and free of rust.
  • Power Cord: Inspect the power cord for damage. Do not use if frayed or cut.
