Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent personal injury and damage to the multimeter or equipment under test.

  • Do not use the multimeter if it appears damaged or if the insulation on the test leads is compromised.
  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the multimeter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
  • Always disconnect the circuit power and discharge all high-voltage capacitors before performing resistance, continuity, diode, or capacitance tests.
  • Ensure the function switch is in the correct position for the desired measurement before connecting the test leads to the circuit.
  • Do not operate the multimeter in explosive gas, vapor, or dust environments.
  • Always use the correct terminals, function, and range for your measurements.
  • Replace the battery as soon as the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The BENNING MM 2-3 requires 2 AAA batteries. These are included with your purchase and may be pre-installed. If not, or if replacement is needed:

  1. Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the rear of the device.
  3. Unscrew the retaining screw(s) and remove the cover.
  4. Insert the 2 AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw(s).

4.2 Connecting Test Leads

Proper connection of test leads is crucial for accurate and safe measurements.

  1. Insert the black test lead to the "COM" (common) input jack.
  2. For voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance, and diode measurements, insert the red test lead to the "VΩHz" input jack.
  3. For current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead to the "A" input jack.
  4. Ensure all connections are firm and secure before taking any measurements.

5. Operating Instructions

This section details how to use your BENNING MM 2-3 for various electrical measurements.

5.1 Powering On/Off

  • To turn the multimeter ON, rotate the central function dial from the "OFF" position to any desired measurement function.
  • To turn the multimeter OFF, rotate the central function dial back to the "OFF" position.
  • The multimeter features an auto-power-off function to conserve battery life. It will automatically shut down after a period of inactivity.

5.2 Function Selection

Rotate the central dial to select the desired measurement function. Some positions may have multiple functions (e.g., AC/DC Voltage, Resistance/Continuity/Diode). Use the "SELECT" button to cycle through these functions.

5.2.1 Measuring Voltage (AC/DC)

  1. Set the function dial to the V~ (AC Voltage) or V- (DC Voltage) position. If both are on one position, use the "SELECT" button to choose AC or DC.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" jack.
  3. Connect the test probes in parallel across the circuit or component you wish to measure.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display.

5.2.2 Measuring Current (AC/DC)

CAUTION: Always connect the multimeter in series with the circuit when measuring current. Never connect it in parallel across a voltage source, as this will blow the fuse.

  1. Set the function dial to the A~ (AC Current) or A- (DC Current) position. Use "SELECT" if needed.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "A" jack.
  3. Open the circuit where you want to measure current and connect the multimeter in series.
  4. Read the current value on the display.

5.2.3 Measuring Resistance

CAUTION: Ensure the circuit is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged before measuring resistance.

  1. Set the function dial to the Ω (Resistance) position.
  2. Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" jack.
  3. Connect the test probes across the component whose resistance you want to measure.
  4. Read the resistance value on the display.

5.2.4 Measuring Temperature

The BENNING MM 2-3 includes a wire temperature sensor for temperature measurements.

  1. Set the function dial to the temperature symbol (usually °C/°F).
  2. Connect the wire temperature sensor to the appropriate input jacks (refer to the multimeter's markings, typically VΩHz and COM, or dedicated temperature inputs if present).
  3. Place the sensor tip on or near the object whose temperature you wish to measure.
  4. Read the temperature value on the display. Use the "SELECT" button to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit if available.

5.2.5 Other Functions

  • MIN/MAX/AVG: Press the "MIN MAX" button to record the minimum, maximum, and average readings over a period. Press again to cycle through values.
  • REL (Relative Value): Press the "REL Δ" button to set the current reading as a reference value. Subsequent readings will be displayed as a difference from this reference.
  • HOLD: Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • VoltSense: This non-contact voltage detection feature allows for quick checks of live AC voltage without direct contact. Refer to the specific instructions in the multimeter's full manual for detailed use.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your BENNING MM 2-3 multimeter.

6.1 Cleaning

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the multimeter is completely dry before use.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries promptly to maintain measurement accuracy. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

6.3 Fuse Replacement

The current input (A) is protected by a 1kV HBC fuse. If the multimeter fails to measure current, the fuse may need replacement. Fuse replacement should only be performed by qualified personnel. Use only fuses of the specified type and rating (e.g., 10A, 1kV HBC).
