User Instruction Manual

Model: P2C-400 With 4 Zones | Brand: SPW

1. Introduction

The Hunter Pro-C P2C-400 is a versatile indoor/outdoor modular irrigation controller designed for efficient and reliable landscape watering. This controller comes with a 4-station base and is expandable up to 32 stations with optional expansion modules. It features a large, backlit display for easy programming and operation in various lighting conditions. This manual provides detailed instructions for the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Pro-C P2C-400 controller.

2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove the controller and any accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. Ensure all parts are present, including the P2C-400 controller unit and any included expansion modules.

2.2 Mounting the Controller

The Pro-C P2C-400 is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Choose a mounting location that is protected from direct sunlight and extreme weather conditions if installed outdoors. Ensure the location allows for easy access to wiring and programming.

2.3 Wiring Connections

The controller is prewired with a power cord and plug for simple installation. For hardwired installations, the power cord can be removed. Connect the common wire from your valves to the common terminal on the controller. Connect individual station wires to the corresponding station terminals. The controller supports conventional wiring from 4 to 23 stations. Optional expansion modules are available to increase the number of active stations.

The main unit features a digital display, a rotary dial for mode selection, and control buttons. The expansion modules are black, rectangular units with screw terminals for wiring connections.

2.3.1 Expansion Modules

To expand the number of stations beyond the base 4, insert optional expansion modules into the designated slots within the controller. These modules allow the system to manage up to 32 stations, including the Hybrid EZ Decoder option for up to 32 total stations (28 stations maximum if two-wire only).

2.3.2 Sensor Inputs

Two sensor inputs come standard for use with Hunter Clik or Solar Sync Sensors. Connect compatible sensors to these inputs to enable automatic adjustments based on weather conditions or other environmental factors.

2.3.3 Master Valve/Pump Start Relay (P/MV) Output

The controller includes one P/MV output for activating a pump start relay or master valve, ensuring proper water flow to the irrigation system.

2.3.4 SmartPort Wiring Harness

A SmartPort Wiring Harness is integrated for quick connection to convenient ROAM and ROAM XL Remotes, allowing for remote control and diagnostics of your irrigation system.

3. Operating Your Pro-C Controller

3.1 Navigating the Interface

The Pro-C controller features a large, backlit LCD display and a rotary dial with various positions for programming and manual operations. Use the arrow buttons to navigate through options and adjust values.

3.2 Setting Date and Time

Turn the dial to the Date/Time position. Use the arrow buttons to set the current date and time. This is crucial for accurate scheduling.

3.3 Programming Irrigation Programs

The controller supports 3 independent irrigation programs (A, B, C), each with up to 4 start times, allowing for customized scheduling.

3.3.1 Setting Start Times

Turn the dial to the Start Times position. Select the program (A, B, or C) and set up to four desired start times for each program.

3.3.2 Setting Run Times

Turn the dial to the Run Times position. Select the program and then set the duration (run time) for each station within that program.

3.3.3 Setting Water Days

Turn the dial to the Water Days position. Select the program and choose the specific days of the week for irrigation. You can also set Non-Water Days in advance, preventing irrigation on specific days regardless of the program interval schedules (e.g., for lawn mowing).

3.4 Manual Operation

Turn the dial to the Manual position to initiate manual watering. You can select a specific station or run all stations for a set duration.

3.5 System Off

Turn the dial to the System Off position to halt all automatic irrigation. This is useful for extended periods of rain or when maintenance is being performed.

3.6 Seasonal Adjustment

Turn the dial to the Seasonal Adjust position. This feature allows for quick adjustment to irrigation run times based on seasonal weather conditions, helping to conserve water.

3.7 Solar Sync Integration

The dedicated Solar Sync dial position provides logic for smart water savings when a Solar Sync sensor is connected. This feature automatically adjusts watering schedules based on local weather data.

3.8 Delay Between Stations

Users can program a delay between stations as the controller advances from one station to the next. This delay can range from a few seconds (to permit slow-closing valves additional time to close) to a much longer period of time (to allow pressure tanks time to recharge), based on user requirements.

4. Advanced Features

4.1 Easy Retrieve Memory

A manual back-up utility that stores complete controller scheduling and setup information in back-up memory. This allows for quick restoration of settings if needed.

4.2 Automatic Short Circuit Protection

This feature, found in all Hunter AC powered controllers, automatically detects electrical faults, typically caused by wiring issues. Only affected stations are skipped, allowing all other stations to water normally as programmed, preventing system shutdown due to a single fault.

4.3 QuickCheck Diagnostic

The QuickCheck feature makes field wiring issues easy to assess with the push of a button. QuickCheck displays an ERR message when a field wiring short is detected on a particular station number, simplifying troubleshooting.

4.4 Sensor Programmability

The ability to specify which program will be shut down in response to a specific sensor alarm. This allows programs unaffected by the sensor to continue automatic operations.

5. Maintenance

The Hunter Pro-C P2C-400 controller requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the wiring connections for any signs of wear or corrosion. Keep the controller's exterior clean by wiping it with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the ventilation openings are clear of debris to prevent overheating.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Power: Check the power connection and ensure the outlet is functional. If hardwired, verify the electrical connections.
  • Station Not Watering:
    • Use the QuickCheck feature to identify wiring shorts. An ERR message indicates a fault on a specific station.
    • Check the valve wiring for loose connections or damage.
    • Verify the run time for the station is set correctly in the program.
    • Ensure the station is not affected by the Automatic Short Circuit Protection.
  • System Not Starting Programs:
    • Ensure the dial is not in the System Off position.
    • Verify that start times, run times, and water days are correctly programmed.
    • Check if a sensor is active and preventing irrigation (e.g., rain sensor). Review Sensor Programmability settings.
    • Confirm the current date and time are accurate.
  • Inaccurate Watering Duration: Adjust the Seasonal Adjustment setting if watering is too much or too little based on current weather.
