3. Setup Instructions

The Intel NUC 13 Pro is a barebone system, meaning you will need to install memory (RAM) and storage (SSD/HDD) before first use.

3.1. Installing Memory (RAM)

  1. Ensure the NUC is powered off and disconnected from the power adapter.
  2. Carefully remove the bottom cover of the NUC. Refer to the diagram below for typical NUC chassis access.
  3. Locate the DDR4 SODIMM slots on the motherboard.
  4. Align the notch on the SODIMM module with the notch in the slot.
  5. Insert the module at a 45-degree angle and press down firmly until the retaining clips snap into place.
  6. Repeat for additional memory modules if applicable.

3.2. Installing Storage

The NUC 13 Pro supports M.2 NVMe SSDs and 2.5-inch SATA storage drives.

3.2.1. M.2 NVMe SSD Installation

  1. With the bottom cover removed, locate the M.2 slot on the motherboard.
  2. Insert the M.2 NVMe SSD into the slot at an angle. Note: This model supports NVMe M.2 SSDs only; SATA M.2 SSDs are not compatible.
  3. Gently push the SSD down and secure it with the provided screw.

3.2.2. 2.5-inch SATA Drive Installation

  1. If installing a 2.5-inch drive, you may need to remove the four rubber feet on the bottom cover to access mounting screws for the drive bay.
  2. Mount the 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD into the designated bay on the bottom cover.
  3. Connect the SATA data and power cables from the motherboard to the drive.

3.3. Connecting Peripherals

  1. Display: Connect your monitor(s) to the HDMI ports on the rear of the NUC.
  2. USB Devices: Connect your keyboard, mouse, and other USB devices to the available USB ports (front and rear).
  3. Network: For wired network connectivity, connect an Ethernet cable to the 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port.
  4. Power: Connect the power adapter to the NUC and then to a power outlet.

4.2. Operating System Installation

The Intel NUC 13 Pro supports various operating systems, including Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Windows 10, Windows 11 Home, and Windows 11 Pro.

  1. Prepare a bootable USB drive with your chosen operating system installer.
  2. Insert the USB drive into an available USB port on the NUC.
  3. Power on the NUC and repeatedly press the appropriate key (usually F2 or Delete) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
  4. Navigate to the boot options and select your USB drive as the primary boot device.
  5. Save changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI. The system will restart and boot from the USB drive.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the operating system.

Important Note for Windows 11 Installation: During Windows 11 installation, the system may not initially detect network drivers for both wired (LAN) and wireless (Wi-Fi) connections. This can prevent proceeding with the setup if an internet connection is required for Microsoft account authentication. To bypass this, you may need to:

  • Prepare a USB drive with the necessary LAN/Wi-Fi drivers downloaded from the Intel support website beforehand.
  • Alternatively, use a mobile phone's USB tethering feature to provide a temporary internet connection during the setup phase.
  • Explore options to create a local user account during installation if an internet connection is unavailable.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Cleaning

  • Regularly clean the exterior of the NUC with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Use compressed air to clear dust from ventilation openings to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating. Ensure the system is powered off before cleaning.

5.2. Software Updates

  • Keep your operating system and drivers updated to ensure optimal performance and security. Visit the Intel support website for the latest NUC drivers and BIOS updates.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1. No Power

  • Verify the power adapter is securely connected to both the NUC and a working power outlet.
  • Test the power outlet with another device.

6.2. No Display Output

  • Ensure the monitor is powered on and the video cable is securely connected to both the NUC and the monitor.
  • Try a different video cable or monitor if available.
  • Confirm that RAM modules are correctly seated.

6.3. Storage Not Detected

  • Check that the M.2 NVMe SSD or 2.5-inch SATA drive is correctly installed and secured.
  • Ensure that for M.2 slots, you are using an NVMe SSD, as SATA M.2 SSDs are not supported by this model.
  • Verify SATA data and power cables are properly connected for 2.5-inch drives.

6.4. Network Connectivity Issues During OS Installation (Windows 11)

  • As noted in Section 4.2, Windows 11 installation may lack initial network drivers. Have LAN/Wi-Fi drivers ready on a USB drive or use USB tethering from a mobile device to establish an internet connection during setup.
