Operating Instructions

This section details how to perform various measurements using the MT-1820 Digital Multimeter.

Examples of various measurements with the MT-1820 Multimeter

Figure 3: Visual examples demonstrating how to perform DC Voltage, AC Voltage, Continuity, Temperature, and Capacitance measurements using the multimeter.

1. Measuring DC Voltage (DCV):

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "V=" position.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component or circuit to be measured, observing polarity.
  4. Read the DC voltage value on the display.

2. Measuring AC Voltage (ACV):

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "V~" position.
  3. Connect the test leads across the AC voltage source.
  4. Read the AC voltage value on the display.

3. Measuring DC Current (DCA):

  1. For currents up to 600mA, insert the red test lead into the "mA" jack. For currents up to 10A, insert the red test lead into the "10A" jack. Insert the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "mA=" or "10A=" position.
  3. Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
  4. Read the DC current value on the display.

4. Measuring AC Current (ACA):

  1. For currents up to 600mA, insert the red test lead into the "mA" jack. For currents up to 10A, insert the red test lead into the "10A" jack. Insert the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "mA~" or "10A~" position.
  3. Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
  4. Read the AC current value on the display.

5. Measuring Resistance (Ω):

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "Ω" position.
  3. Ensure the circuit is de-energized. Connect the test leads across the resistor or component.
  4. Read the resistance value on the display.

6. Continuity Test:

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "Continuity" position (often represented by a sound wave or speaker symbol).
  3. Touch the test leads across the circuit or component. A continuous beep indicates a good connection (low resistance).

7. Diode Test:

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "Diode" position (often represented by an arrow with a bar symbol).
  3. Connect the red lead to the anode and the black lead to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the leads; the display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.

8. Capacitance Measurement:

  1. Insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack and the black test lead into the "COM" jack.
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "Capacitance" position (often marked with a capacitor symbol).
  3. Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged before connecting the test leads.
  4. Connect the test leads across the capacitor.
  5. Read the capacitance value on the display.

9. Temperature Measurement:

  1. Connect the temperature probe (thermocouple) to the appropriate input jacks (usually marked "TEMP" or with a temperature symbol).
  2. Turn the rotary switch to the "TEMP" position (often °C/°F).
  3. Place the tip of the temperature probe on or near the object whose temperature is to be measured.
  4. Read the temperature value on the display.

Maintenance

Cleaning:

Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the device is off and disconnected from any circuits before cleaning.

Battery Replacement:

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in the "Setup" section. Always use fresh 1.5V AAA batteries.

Fuse Replacement:

If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. Refer to the specifications for the correct fuse type and rating. Fuse replacement should only be performed by qualified personnel.

Troubleshooting

  • No Display: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted.
  • "OL" or "Open Loop" on Display: This usually indicates an open circuit, a measurement exceeding the range, or incorrect lead connection for resistance/continuity/diode tests.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure correct function and range are selected. Check battery level. Verify test leads are properly connected and not damaged.
  • Current Measurement Not Working: Check the fuse. Ensure the multimeter is connected in series with the circuit.
