Setup

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove the reel from its packaging. Inspect for any visible damage. Ensure all components listed in the product description are present.

2. Spooling the Line

  1. Attach the reel to a rod for easier spooling.
  2. Thread the line through the line guide and tie it securely to the spool arbor using an appropriate fishing knot (e.g., arbor knot).
  3. Maintain light tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool. Ensure the line lays evenly across the spool. Do not overfill the spool; leave a small gap from the spool lip to prevent tangles.

3. Adjusting the Braking System (Magnetic Brake)

The Alinox 300 features an 8-magnet magnetic braking system to control spool rotation during casting and prevent backlash. The magnetic brake dial is typically located on the side plate opposite the handle.

  • Higher Settings: Increase braking force, ideal for beginners, windy conditions, or casting lighter lures. This reduces the chance of backlash.
  • Lower Settings: Decrease braking force, allowing for longer casts. Use with caution and practice to avoid backlash.

Start with a higher setting and gradually reduce it as you become more comfortable with casting to optimize distance while minimizing backlash.

4. Setting the Drag

The drag system controls the amount of force required to pull line from the reel. Proper drag setting is crucial to prevent line breakage and ensure effective fish fighting.

  1. Pull line directly from the reel by hand.
  2. Adjust the star-shaped drag knob (located next to the handle) until line can be pulled out with moderate resistance. A common guideline is to set the drag to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.
  3. Test the drag by pulling the line. It should release smoothly without jerking.

Operating Instructions

1. Casting

  1. Prepare for Cast: Press the thumb bar to disengage the spool. Hold the spool with your thumb to prevent line from coming off.
  2. Swing and Release: Make your casting motion. As the rod loads and you begin your forward cast, lift your thumb from the spool to allow the lure to fly.
  3. Thumb Control: Maintain light thumb contact on the spool throughout the cast to control its speed and prevent backlash, especially as the lure approaches the target or hits the water.
  4. Engage Reel: As the lure lands, turn the handle slightly to re-engage the spool and prepare for retrieve.

2. Retrieving

Turn the handle to retrieve your line and lure. The gear ratio (6.6:1 or 8.1:1) determines how quickly the line is retrieved per turn of the handle. A higher ratio means faster retrieve, suitable for covering water quickly or working fast-moving lures. A lower ratio provides more power, ideal for slow presentations or fighting strong fish.

3. Fighting Fish

  • Maintain constant tension on the line.
  • Use the rod to pump the fish towards you, then reel down to take up slack.
  • Allow the drag to work. If the fish makes a strong run, let the drag release line rather than trying to stop it by force, which can break your line or damage the reel.
  • Avoid over-tightening the drag during a fight.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth to remove dirt, salt, and debris.
  • Clean the line guide and spool area to ensure smooth line movement.

2. Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knobs, spool shaft, and line roller.
  • Apply a thin layer of reel grease to the main gears if you disassemble the reel for deeper cleaning. Refer to a professional if unsure about disassembly.
  • Use only lubricants specifically designed for fishing reels.

3. Storage

Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Loosen the drag completely before storage to prevent compression of the drag washers.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Backlash / Bird's Nest Spool spinning faster than line is leaving, improper brake setting, thumb control. Increase magnetic brake setting. Improve thumb control during casting. Ensure proper spool tension.
Stiff or Grinding Retrieve Lack of lubrication, dirt/debris in gears, damaged components. Clean and lubricate the reel. If problem persists, professional service may be required.
Drag Slipping or Inconsistent Drag washers are dry, dirty, or worn; drag not tightened sufficiently. Clean and re-grease drag washers. Ensure drag knob is tightened appropriately. Replace worn washers if necessary.
Line Not Laying Evenly Line guide issue, improper spooling technique. Check line guide for obstructions or damage. Respool line carefully, ensuring even tension.
