5. Setup

5.1 Wiring Diagram

Connect the camera to your flight controller or video transmitter using the provided 6-pin silicone cable according to the following pinout:

PinFunctionDescription
5-36VPower InputConnect to a 5-36V DC power source.
GNDGroundConnect to common ground.
VideoVideo OutputConnect to video input of VTX or OSD.
G/TXUART Control (TX)Connect to RX pin of flight controller for UART control.
M/RXUART Control (RX)Connect to TX pin of flight controller for UART control.

5.2 UART Control Mode Switching

The RunCam Phoenix 2 Joshua Edition supports both Joystick Control Mode and UART Control Mode. The default mode is Joystick Control. To switch between modes:

  1. Short the two camera control pins: Locate the two small pins on the camera's PCB, typically labeled for control.
  2. Power on the camera: With the pins shorted, apply power to the camera. The camera will automatically switch between Joystick Control and UART Control modes.
  3. Save Mode: The selected mode will be saved after power cycling. Once the desired mode is set, unplug the short-circuit cable.

UART Control works with Flight Controllers running BetaFlight 3.3 or above, ButterFlight 3.4 or above, CleanFlight 2.2 or above, or Kiss Flight RC36.

6. Operating

6.1 On-Screen Display (OSD) Menu

When in Joystick Control Mode, connect the optional OSD joystick to access the camera's settings menu. Navigate through the menu using the joystick to adjust parameters such as:

  • Exposure settings
  • White Balance
  • Image enhancements
  • Aspect Ratio (4:3 or 16:9)

In UART Control Mode, camera settings can be adjusted directly through your flight controller's OSD menu (e.g., BetaFlight OSD) after proper configuration.

6.2 Aspect Ratio Switching

The camera supports both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. This setting can be changed via the OSD menu to match your FPV goggles or monitor for optimal viewing experience.

7. Maintenance

  • Lens Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialized lens cleaning solution to gently clean the lens. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the lens.
  • Storage: Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use.
  • Inspection: Periodically check wiring and connectors for any signs of wear or damage.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No image on FPV feedIncorrect wiring, no power, faulty cable, VTX issue.Check all wiring connections (power, ground, video). Ensure camera is receiving 5-36V. Test with a different cable or VTX if possible.
Poor image quality (blurry, distorted)Dirty lens, damaged lens, incorrect OSD settings, interference.Clean the lens. Check OSD settings for sharpness, brightness, contrast. Ensure proper shielding from electrical interference.
Camera settings not savingPower loss before saving, OSD joystick issue.Ensure you exit the OSD menu correctly to save settings. If using UART control, verify flight controller configuration.
Cannot switch control modesPins not shorted correctly, power cycle issue.Ensure the two control pins are properly shorted before powering on the camera. Power cycle the camera completely.
