2. Setup and Adjustment

Proper adjustment of your backpack is crucial for comfort and load distribution, especially during extended use.

  1. Back System Adjustment: The Swisswool Tec-Knit Back system is designed for stability and comfort. Ensure the back panel sits flush against your back. While this model has a fixed back length, proper loading and strap adjustments optimize its performance.
  2. Hip Belt: Fasten the hip belt securely around your hips. The hip belt should bear most of the pack's weight, resting comfortably on your iliac crest (hip bones). Adjust the straps until snug but not restrictive. The removable hip belt allows for customization based on activity.
  3. Shoulder Straps: Tighten the shoulder straps until the pack is close to your body. They should not carry the primary weight but keep the pack stable.
  4. Load Lifter Straps: Located above the shoulder straps, these straps pull the top of the pack closer to your body, improving stability and comfort. Adjust them to a 45-degree angle.
  5. Chest Strap: Fasten the chest strap across your sternum. Adjust its height and tension to prevent the shoulder straps from spreading too wide and to enhance stability. The chest strap includes a signal whistle for emergencies.
  6. Compression Straps: Use the external compression straps to cinch down the load, preventing items from shifting and keeping the pack compact.

3. Operating Instructions

The Peak Light 32L is equipped with various features to support your alpine activities.

  • Main Compartment Access: The pack features a circumferential zipper, providing rapid and full access to the entire contents of the main compartment from the front. This allows for easy retrieval of items without unpacking from the top.
  • Gear Loops and Attachments:
    • A-Skifix: For diagonal ski attachment.
    • D-Skifix: For A-frame ski attachment.
    • Ice Axe Loops: Securely attach ice axes.
    • Hiking Pole Loops: Attach hiking poles when not in use.
    • Helmet Net: An integrated net allows for external helmet attachment.
    • Rope Attachments: Straps designed for securing climbing ropes.
  • Pockets:
    • Hip Pocket: Conveniently located on the hip belt for quick access to small essentials like snacks or a phone.
    • Lid Compartment: A top-access pocket, often including a key holder, for items you need to access frequently.
  • Hydration System Compatibility: The backpack is designed to accommodate a hydration system (not included). Route the hydration tube through the designated port.

4. Maintenance

Proper care extends the life of your Ortovox Peak Light 32L Backpack.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the backpack with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. For stubborn stains, use a mild soap solution and rinse thoroughly. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, or use harsh detergents, as this can damage the material and coatings.
  • Drying: Allow the backpack to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Ensure all compartments are open during drying.
  • Storage: Store the backpack in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid compressing it for long periods if possible.
  • Zipper Care: Keep zippers clean and free of debris. Periodically apply a zipper lubricant if they become stiff.

5. Troubleshooting

Here are solutions to common issues you might encounter:

  • Discomfort or Poor Fit:

Review Section 2: Setup and Adjustment. Ensure the hip belt is carrying most of the weight, shoulder straps are snug but not tight, and load lifters are adjusted. Experiment with different adjustments while the pack is loaded.

  • Items Shifting Inside:

Utilize the internal and external compression straps to secure your load. Pack heavier items closer to your back and centered, lighter items further away or at the top/bottom.

  • Zippers Sticking:

Clean the zipper teeth with a small brush to remove dirt or sand. Apply a silicone-based zipper lubricant or a graphite pencil to ease movement. Avoid forcing stuck zippers.

  • Water Repellency Decreasing:

While the backpack is water-resistant, prolonged exposure to heavy rain may require a rain cover (not included) for full protection. Over time, the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating may wear off. Specialized DWR sprays can be applied to restore water repellency.
