Setup

1. Installation

The U-Com 8R can be installed on most motorcycle helmets using either the adhesive clip or the clamp mounting bracket. Choose the microphone type suitable for your helmet (boom microphone for open-face/modular helmets, adhesive microphone for full-face helmets).

  1. Choose Mounting Method:
    • Adhesive Clip: Clean the helmet surface where the intercom will be mounted. Peel off the protective film from the 3M adhesive on the clip and firmly press it onto the helmet. Hold for 30 seconds to ensure proper adhesion.
    • Clamp Bracket: Slide the clamp between the helmet shell and the inner padding. Secure it in place.
  2. Attach Intercom Unit: Slide the U-Com 8R unit onto the chosen mounting clip/bracket until it clicks securely into place.
  3. Install Speakers: Place the 40mm HD speakers inside the helmet's ear pockets. Ensure they are positioned directly over your ears for optimal sound. Use the included hook-and-loop fasteners if necessary.
  4. Install Microphone:
    • Boom Microphone: Attach the boom microphone to the helmet's chin bar or cheek pad, positioning the microphone close to your mouth.
    • Adhesive Microphone: For full-face helmets, attach the small adhesive microphone inside the chin bar, ensuring it is not obstructed.
  5. Connect Cables: Route the speaker and microphone cables neatly under the helmet padding and connect them to the appropriate ports on the U-Com 8R unit.

2. Charging the Battery

Before first use, fully charge the U-Com 8R unit. The integrated battery provides approximately 18 hours of talk time and takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge.

  1. Connect the supplied USB Type-C cable to the charging port on the U-Com 8R unit.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to a USB power source (e.g., computer, USB wall adapter).
  3. The LED indicator will show charging status (refer to the device's LED guide for specific colors/patterns).
  4. Once fully charged, disconnect the cable.

3. Initial Pairing (Bluetooth)

To connect your U-Com 8R to your smartphone, GPS, or TFT display via Bluetooth:

  1. Ensure the U-Com 8R is powered off.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the LED indicator flashes rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
  3. On your device (smartphone, GPS, TFT), enable Bluetooth and search for available devices.
  4. Select "Interphone U-Com 8R" from the list.
  5. Once connected, the LED indicator will change to a steady blue light.

Operating Instructions

Basic Controls

The U-Com 8R features a multi-button design for intuitive control. Familiarize yourself with the button functions:

  • Power Button: Press and hold to power on/off. Short press for battery status.
  • Phone Button: Answer/end calls, activate voice assistant.
  • Music Button: Play/pause music, skip tracks.
  • Intercom Button: Initiate/end intercom conversations.
  • Volume Up/Down: Adjust audio volume.

Mesh Communication (Mesh 2.0)

The U-Com 8R utilizes Mesh 2.0 technology for group communication, allowing up to 24 riders to connect easily without complex pairing procedures. This technology ensures a reliable connection and maintains communication even if a rider leaves and re-enters the group.

  1. Starting a Mesh Group: Power on all U-Com 8R units. Press the Mesh button on one unit to initiate a Mesh group. Other units will automatically join the group when in range.
  2. Joining an Existing Mesh Group: Simply power on your U-Com 8R unit within range of an active Mesh group. It will automatically connect.
  3. Communication: Once connected, all riders in the Mesh group can communicate simultaneously.

Phone Calls, Music, and GPS

  • Phone Calls: When connected to your smartphone, incoming calls will be announced. Press the Phone button to answer, press again to end.
  • Music Playback: Use the Music button to play or pause music from your connected device. Use volume buttons to adjust.
  • GPS Navigation: Audio instructions from your GPS device will be streamed directly to your speakers. Intercom conversations will be temporarily lowered or paused during GPS announcements.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the intercom unit with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Battery Care: For optimal battery life, avoid fully discharging the unit frequently. Charge regularly. If storing for extended periods, charge the battery to about 50% every few months.
  • Waterproofing: While the unit is waterproof (IP67), ensure the USB port cover is securely closed when not charging to maintain water resistance.

Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Ensure the unit is fully charged. Try connecting to a different USB power source.
  • Cannot Pair Bluetooth: Ensure the U-Com 8R is in pairing mode (rapid flashing LED). Check your device's Bluetooth settings and try forgetting/re-pairing the device.
  • No Audio/Low Volume: Check speaker connections. Ensure volume is turned up on both the intercom and the connected device.
  • Mesh Connection Issues: Ensure all units are within range (1.6 km). Try restarting all units and re-initiating the Mesh group.
  • Distorted Audio: Check microphone placement. Ensure speakers are correctly positioned in the helmet.
