TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch User Manual

Model: TC-10352160

Brand: TRU Components

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of the TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch. This device is designed to detect liquid levels and provide an electrical signal based on the presence or absence of liquid at a specific point. It features a robust design with an M16 thread for installation, IP65 protection, and both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts for versatile application.

2. Safety Instructions

Please read and understand all safety instructions before installing or operating the level switch. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Electrical Safety: This device operates at up to 250 V/AC and 1 A. Ensure all power is disconnected before installation or maintenance. Only qualified personnel should perform electrical connections.
  • Proper Installation: Install the switch securely using the M16 thread. Ensure the cable connections are properly insulated and protected from environmental factors.
  • Environmental Protection: The switch has an IP65 rating, indicating protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets. Do not submerge the switch beyond its intended operational depth or expose it to high-pressure water.
  • Temperature Limits: Do not operate the switch outside its specified temperature range of -30 °C to 90 °C.
  • Material Compatibility: The switch is made of polyphenylene. Ensure compatibility with the liquid it will be immersed in.
  • Cable Integrity: Regularly inspect the 0.50 m cable for any signs of damage. Do not use the switch if the cable insulation is compromised.

3. Product Components

The TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch package includes the following:

  • 1 x TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch with integrated 0.50 m cable (open end)
  • Installation Hardware (as supplied by manufacturer)
TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch with black body, white nut, and black cable.

Figure 3.1: Overview of the TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch. The image shows the black plastic body of the switch, including the M16 threaded section with a white securing nut, and the float arm extending from the main body. A black electrical cable, approximately 0.50 meters long, is visible, neatly bundled with a beige tie, and terminates in open wires for connection.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation of the level switch:

  1. Prepare Mounting Location: Identify a suitable location for the level switch. The mounting surface must have an M16 threaded hole or be prepared to accept the M16 thread of the switch. Ensure the float arm has sufficient clearance to move freely within its 50° movement range.
  2. Mount the Switch: Insert the threaded portion of the level switch into the prepared M16 hole. Secure it in place using the provided nut, ensuring a tight seal to maintain the IP65 rating. The orientation of the float arm will determine the switching action (normally open or normally closed) relative to the liquid level.
  3. Electrical Connection: The switch comes with a 0.50 m cable with open ends. Identify the NO (Normally Open) and NC (Normally Closed) contacts.
    • Normally Open (NO): The circuit is open (no current flows) when the float is in its default position (e.g., liquid absent), and closes (current flows) when the liquid level changes and activates the float.
    • Normally Closed (NC): The circuit is closed (current flows) when the float is in its default position, and opens (no current flows) when the liquid level changes and activates the float.
Connect the wires to your control circuit according to your application's requirements. Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated. Refer to local electrical codes and standards.
  4. Test Functionality: After installation and wiring, carefully test the switch's operation by manually changing the liquid level or simulating the level change to verify that the switch activates as expected.

5. Operating Principles

The TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch operates on a simple float mechanism. As the liquid level changes, the float arm pivots, causing an internal switch to actuate. This actuation changes the state of the electrical contacts (either from Normally Open to Closed, or Normally Closed to Open).

  • Movement Range: The float arm has a movement range of 50°.
  • Switching Angle: The switch actuates within an 8° switching angle. This means a small change in the float's position is sufficient to trigger the switch.
  • Contact Type: The switch provides both 1x NO (Normally Open) and 1x NC (Normally Closed) contacts, offering flexibility for various control applications.

6. Maintenance

The TRU Components SE-VIW-M16-H Level Switch is designed for low maintenance. However, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  • Visual Inspection: Regularly check the switch body, float arm, and cable for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or wear. Ensure the mounting nut remains tight.
  • Cleaning: If the switch is exposed to liquids that may leave residue, periodically clean the float arm and body to prevent buildup that could impede its movement. Use a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution compatible with polyphenylene. Ensure no cleaning solution enters the electrical connections.
  • Functionality Check: Periodically verify the switch's operation by observing its response to changing liquid levels.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your level switch, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Switch does not activate or de-activate.
  • Incorrect wiring (NO/NC).
  • Float arm obstructed or stuck.
  • Electrical circuit issue (no power, broken wire).
  • Switch damaged internally.
  • Verify wiring against application requirements.
  • Inspect float arm for obstructions; clean if necessary.
  • Check power supply and continuity of wiring.
  • If damaged, replace the switch.
Intermittent or erratic switching.
  • Buildup on float arm.
  • Loose electrical connections.
  • Vibration or turbulence in liquid.
  • Clean float arm and body.
  • Secure all electrical connections.
  • Consider baffling or repositioning the switch to minimize turbulence.
Liquid leakage at mounting point.
  • Nut not tightened sufficiently.
  • Damaged thread or sealing surface.
  • Tighten the mounting nut.
  • Inspect threads and sealing surfaces for damage. Replace if necessary.
