DOREMiDi MPC-10 MIDI Pedal Converter User Manual

Brand: DOREMiDi | Model: MPC-10

1. Introduction

The DOREMiDi MPC-10 MIDI Pedal Converter is designed to interface various types of instrument pedals with MIDI systems. It automatically detects and supports a range of pedals, including expression pedals (positive and reverse polarity), sustain pedals, dual-switch pedals, and FSR electronic hi-hats. The MPC-10 features both MIDI DIN and USB MIDI outputs, making it suitable for diverse musical performance and production environments.

This manual provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, and configuring your MPC-10 device.

2. Product Features

  • Versatile Pedal Compatibility: Equipped with two pedal connection interfaces (EXP1, EXP2) that automatically detect and support positive polarity expression pedals, reverse polarity expression pedals, sustain pedals, dual-switch pedals, and FSR electronic hi-hats.
  • MIDI Output: Features a 3.5mm audio port for MIDI output, convertible to a standard MIDI DIN interface using a 3.5-to-MIDI five-pin cable (not included).
  • USB MIDI Connectivity: Provides USB MIDI functionality for direct connection to computers, mobile phones, and other terminal devices. Compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android systems without requiring driver installation (plug and play).
  • Configurable MIDI Messages: Allows flexible configuration of MIDI messages for each pedal via the DOREMiDi pedal setting software. Users can customize MIDI channel, CC controller, PC controller, Note messages, and flipping effects.
  • Firmware Upgradeability: Supports firmware upgrades to ensure ongoing optimization and personalized customization.

4. Setup

4.1 Connecting Pedals

The MPC-10 features two 1/4-inch (6.35mm) input jacks labeled EXP1 and EXP2 for connecting your pedals. The device automatically detects the type of pedal connected (expression, sustain, dual-switch, FSR hi-hat).

  • Connect your expression or sustain pedals to the EXP1 and/or EXP2 inputs.
  • For optimal detection, ensure pedals are connected before powering on the MPC-10. If you change pedals while the unit is on, power cycle the MPC-10 to ensure correct detection.
  • When connecting expression pedals, position them approximately in the middle of their range during power-up to prevent misidentification as a footswitch.

4.2 Power and MIDI Connections

The MPC-10 is powered via its USB-C port and can output MIDI data through both USB and a 3.5mm MIDI OUT jack.

  • USB Connection: Connect the supplied USB-C cable from the MPC-10's USB port to a computer, mobile device, or a powered USB hub. The MPC-10 will appear as a class-compliant MIDI device.
  • MIDI DIN Connection: Use the included 3.5mm to MIDI 5-pin DIN adapter cable to connect the MPC-10's 3.5mm MIDI OUT jack to the MIDI IN port of your musical instrument or MIDI interface.

5. Operating Instructions

Once connected, the MPC-10 will automatically begin sending MIDI messages based on the pedal inputs. By default, the MPC-10 sends specific MIDI messages:

  • Expression pedals typically map to MIDI CC#21 (undefined by default, often remapped to CC#11 for expression in DAWs).
  • Single footswitches map to MIDI CC#64 (Sustain).
  • Dual footswitches (or two single footswitches via a TRS splitter) map to MIDI CC#64 (Sustain) and CC#66 (Sostenuto).
  • All controller messages are sent on MIDI channel 1 by default.

These default settings can be customized using the DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool software.

6. Configuration Software (DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool)

The DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool allows you to customize the MIDI messages sent by each pedal connected to the MPC-10. This software is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems.

6.1 Software Download and Installation

  1. Visit the official DOREMiDi website to download the latest version of the "Pedal Config Tool" for your operating system.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. Ensure your operating system's security settings allow the installation of applications from identified developers.

6.2 Customizing Pedal Settings

  • Connect your MPC-10 to your computer via USB.
  • Launch the DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool. The software should detect your MPC-10.
  • Within the software, you can configure parameters such as:
    • MIDI Channel (1-16)
    • CC Controller Number (0-127)
    • Program Change (PC) messages
    • Note messages
    • Expression pedal curves (linear, logarithmic, exponential) and range (min/max values).
    • Flipping effects for pedal actions.
  • After making changes, click the "Set" button (usually located at the bottom of the software interface) to apply the new settings to your MPC-10. The MPC-10 retains these settings even after being powered off.
  • The software also includes a MIDI event log to monitor the data being sent by your pedals, aiding in configuration verification.

7. Firmware Upgrade

DOREMiDi periodically releases firmware updates to improve performance and add new features. You can upgrade the MPC-10 firmware using the Pedal Config Tool.

  1. Disconnect the USB power cable from the MPC-10.
  2. Locate the recessed reset button near the MIDI OUT connection. Use a paperclip or similar thin object to press and hold this button.
  3. While holding the reset button, reconnect the USB power cable. The power indicator light on the MPC-10 will blink rapidly, indicating it is in firmware upgrade mode.
  4. Connect the MPC-10 to your computer via USB.
  5. Open the DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool. Navigate to the "Setting" menu and select "Firmware Upgrade."
  6. The software will check for available updates, download, and install them automatically. Do not disconnect the MPC-10 during the upgrade process.
  7. Once the upgrade is complete, the MPC-10 will restart.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Device Not Recognized by Computer/DAW:
    • Ensure the USB-C cable is securely connected and the MPC-10 is powered.
    • Try a different USB port or cable.
    • If using an iPad or mobile device, ensure you are using a powered USB hub.
    • Verify that your DAW or software is configured to recognize new MIDI devices.
  • Pedal Not Responding or Incorrectly Detected:
    • Power cycle the MPC-10 after connecting or changing pedals.
    • Ensure expression pedals are in a neutral position during power-up.
    • Check pedal cables for damage and ensure they are fully inserted into the EXP1/EXP2 jacks.
    • Use the DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool to verify pedal detection and MIDI message output.
    • For dual footswitches, ensure they are Normally Open (N/O) type for reliable detection.
  • MIDI Messages Not as Expected:
    • Use the DOREMiDi Pedal Config Tool to customize MIDI CC numbers, channels, and other parameters.
    • Check your DAW or instrument's MIDI mapping settings to ensure they are listening for the correct MIDI messages from the MPC-10.
  • Configuration Software Issues (Mac):
    • Ensure the software is downloaded from the official DOREMiDi website.
    • If macOS prevents installation, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and allow apps downloaded from "DOREMiDi" or "App Store and identified developers."
    • If UI elements are unreadable, ensure you have the latest software version.
