2. Product Overview

2.1 Key Features

3. Setup

3.1 Power Supply

The radio can be powered by either AAA batteries or a USB power source.

Using AAA Batteries (Not Included)

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  2. Insert four (4) AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

Using USB Power

  1. Connect the provided USB power cable to the DC 5V jack on the side of the radio.
  2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to a USB power adapter (not included) or a computer's USB port.
  3. The radio will operate using the external USB power.

3.2 Antenna for Optimal Reception

Proper antenna positioning is crucial for clear reception.

  • For FM/Shortwave (SW): Extend the telescopic rod antenna to its full length (up to 45 cm) and rotate it to find the best reception position.
  • For AM: The radio uses a built-in bar antenna. For optimal AM reception, place the radio near a window, away from electrical appliances, and rotate the entire radio unit to find the clearest signal.
  • Important Note: This radio does not have an external antenna terminal. Always use the radio in a location with good broadcast signal strength, ideally outdoors or in an open area for best results.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

  • To Power On: Press the Power button (Power button icon) briefly. The display will light up.
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds. When powered off, the display will show the digital clock.

4.2 Band Selection

Press the BAND button repeatedly to cycle through FM, AM, and SW bands.

4.3 Tuning

There are several ways to tune into stations:

  • Manual Tuning: Use the Up (Up arrow button icon) and Down (Down arrow button icon) arrow buttons to adjust the frequency step by step.
  • Auto Scan (ATS): Press and hold the ATS button (often combined with another function, refer to Figure 1) to automatically scan and save available stations.
  • Scan Up/Down: Briefly press the Up or Down arrow buttons to scan for the next available station.

4.4 Memory Presets

The radio can store up to 20 stations per band.

  • To Save a Station:
    1. Tune to the desired station.
    2. Press the MEMO button. The memory location number will flash on the display.
    3. Use the M+ or M- buttons to select the desired memory location.
    4. Press MEMO again to confirm and save the station.
  • To Recall a Saved Station:
    1. Press the MEMO button briefly.
    2. Use the M+ or M- buttons to navigate through the saved stations.

4.5 Volume Control

Adjust the volume using the rotary Volume Knob located on the right side of the radio.

4.6 Digital Clock Setting

When the radio is off, the display shows the current time. To set the time:

  1. With the radio off, press and hold the TIME SET button (refer to Figure 1 for location). The hour digits will flash.
  2. Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to adjust the hour.
  3. Press TIME SET again to switch to minute adjustment. The minute digits will flash.
  4. Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to adjust the minutes.
  5. Press TIME SET once more to confirm and exit time setting.

4.7 Alarm Clock Function

The radio can be set to turn on automatically at a specified time.

  1. Press and hold the ALARM button (refer to Figure 1). The alarm time will flash.
  2. Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to set the desired alarm hour.
  3. Press ALARM again to set the minutes.
  4. Use the Up or Down arrow buttons to set the desired alarm minutes.
  5. Press ALARM once more to confirm. The alarm icon will appear on the display.
  6. When the alarm time is reached, the radio will automatically power on and play the last tuned station, or a 'beep' sound will play.

4.8 Sleep Timer Function

The sleep timer allows the radio to automatically turn off after a set period.

  1. With the radio on, press the SLEEP button (refer to Figure 1). The sleep timer duration will appear on the display.
  2. Press the SLEEP button repeatedly to cycle through the available durations: 90-80-70-60-50-40-30-20-10 minutes, or OFF.
  3. The radio will automatically power off after the selected time.

4.9 Key Lock Function

The key lock function prevents accidental button presses, useful when carrying the radio.

  • To Activate Key Lock: Press and hold the LOCK button (often indicated by a key icon, refer to Figure 1) for a few seconds until the lock icon appears on the display.
  • To Deactivate Key Lock: Press and hold the LOCK button again until the lock icon disappears.

4.10 Headphone Use

Connect 3.5mm stereo headphones (not included) to the headphone jack on the side of the radio for private listening.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your ZHIWHIS ZWS-8801 radio, please refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No Power / Radio Does Not Turn On:
    • Check if the batteries are inserted correctly with the right polarity.
    • Replace old or depleted batteries with new ones.
    • If using USB power, ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the radio and a working power source.
    • Ensure the power button is pressed firmly.
  • Poor Reception / Static Sound:
    • For FM/SW: Fully extend the telescopic antenna and rotate it to find the optimal signal.
    • For AM: Rotate the entire radio unit to improve reception. Try moving the radio to a different location, preferably near a window and away from electronic devices that may cause interference.
    • Ensure you are in an area with good broadcast signal strength.
  • Buttons Not Responding / Key Lock Active:
    • Check if the key lock function is activated (a key icon may be visible on the display). Press and hold the LOCK button to deactivate it.
  • Alarm Does Not Sound:
    • Verify that the alarm time is set correctly and the alarm function is activated (alarm icon visible).
    • Ensure the volume is not set to minimum.

7. Maintenance

  • Clean the radio with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Avoid exposing the radio to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, dust, or moisture.
  • If not using the radio for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
