Setup
1. Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
- Slide the battery compartment cover downwards to open it.
- Insert three (3) AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover by sliding it upwards until it clicks into place.
2. Microphone Windscreen Attachment
- Gently slide the foam windscreen onto the microphone at the top of the device.
- Ensure the windscreen is securely fitted to prevent it from falling off during use.
- The windscreen helps to reduce wind noise and improve measurement accuracy, especially in outdoor environments.

Operating Instructions
1. Power On/Off
- To power on the device, press and hold the Power button (
) located on the front panel. - To power off the device, press and hold the Power button again. The device also features an automatic power-off function to conserve battery life.
2. Display and Backlight
- The 2.25-inch LCD screen displays noise levels in decibels (dB), along with temperature and relative humidity.
- To activate or deactivate the backlight, long press the Backlight button (
). This improves visibility in low-light conditions.

3. A/C Weighting Selection
- The TS-501B supports both A-weighting and C-weighting.
- To switch between A-weighting and C-weighting, long press the °C/°F button. The selected weighting (A or C) will be displayed on the screen.
- A-Weighting: Measures noise levels as perceived by the human ear (30-130 dBA). Suitable for general noise measurements in communities, offices, and residential areas.
- C-Weighting: Measures the actual sound pressure level across a wider frequency range (30-130 dBC). Ideal for analyzing industrial noise, audio systems, and environments with significant low-frequency components.

Figure 4: A-Weighting (30-130 dBA) measures the relative loudness perceived by the human ear, suitable for environmental noise assessment.

Figure 5: C-Weighting (30-130 dBC) is used for sound system commissioning and industrial noise measurements, providing a flatter frequency response.
4. MAX/MIN Measurement
- Press the MAX/MIN button (
) to cycle through Maximum (MAX) and Minimum (MIN) measured values. - MAX: Displays the highest sound pressure level recorded since the function was activated.
- MIN: Displays the lowest sound pressure level recorded since the function was activated.

Figure 6: MAX represents the highest values measured over a given period, while MIN represents the lowest values.
5. Data Hold Function
- To freeze the current reading on the display, press the Hold button (
). The "H" indicator will appear on the screen. - Press the Hold button again to release the hold and resume live measurements.
6. Fast/Slow Time Weighting
- Press the F/S button (
) to switch between Fast and Slow time weighting. - FAST: Provides a rapid response to sound changes, suitable for capturing sudden noise peaks.
- SLOW: Provides an averaged response to sound changes, suitable for measuring average noise levels over time.
7. Temperature Unit Conversion
- To switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) for temperature display, short press the °C/°F button.
8. Low Battery Indicator
- A low battery indicator will appear on the screen when the battery level is low. Replace the batteries promptly to ensure accurate measurements.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the device. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store the device in its carry case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Microphone Protection: Always use the provided microphone windscreen to protect the condenser microphone from dust and physical damage. When storing, use the protective cap over the microphone.
- Calibration: The device is factory calibrated. For continued accuracy, periodic professional calibration may be required depending on usage and industry standards.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity. Replace with new AAA batteries. |
| Inaccurate readings. | Microphone obstructed or damaged; strong wind interference; device not calibrated. | Ensure microphone is clear. Use windscreen in windy conditions. Consider professional calibration if accuracy issues persist. |
| Display is dim or flickering. | Low battery level. | Replace batteries. |
| "OL" or "UL" displayed. | Overload (sound level too high) or Underload (sound level too low). | Move to an environment within the 30-130 dB measurement range. |
