Operating Instructions
Brewing Coffee

Figure 3: The fully assembled BERGNER Italian Coffee Machine, ready for use.
- Fill the Lower Chamber: Unscrew the upper chamber from the lower chamber. Fill the lower chamber with cold water up to the level of the safety valve. Do not overfill.
- Add Coffee Grounds: Insert the filter funnel into the lower chamber. Fill the filter funnel with finely ground coffee. Do not tamp the coffee. Level the grounds gently.
- Assemble: Screw the upper chamber firmly onto the lower chamber. Ensure a tight seal to prevent steam leakage. Use the body of the coffee maker for leverage, not the handle.
- Heat: Place the coffee maker on a stovetop burner over medium heat. For gas stoves, ensure the flame does not extend beyond the base of the coffee maker.
- Brewing Process: As the water heats, pressure will build, forcing hot water through the coffee grounds and into the upper chamber. You will hear a gurgling sound as the coffee brews.
- Serve: Once the upper chamber is full of coffee (the gurgling sound will subside), remove the coffee maker from the heat immediately. Pour and serve.
Note: The beech wood handle is designed for handling the hot coffee maker. Always use caution when handling hot appliances.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and longevity of your coffee machine.
- After Each Use: Allow the coffee maker to cool completely. Disassemble all parts. Discard used coffee grounds.
- Washing: Wash all components (upper chamber, lower chamber, filter funnel, filter plate, gasket) with warm water and a mild detergent. Use a soft brush or sponge to remove any coffee residues.
- Rinsing: Rinse all parts thoroughly with clean water.
- Drying: Dry all components completely before reassembling or storing. Air drying is recommended to prevent water spots and odors.
- Do Not Use: Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the aluminum finish.
- Dishwasher: This coffee maker is not dishwasher safe. Hand wash only.
- Gasket and Filter Plate: Periodically check the rubber gasket and filter plate for wear and tear. Replace if they appear damaged or if you notice steam leakage during brewing.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee does not brew or brews slowly. | Too little water; coffee grounds too fine or tamped too tightly; heat too low; safety valve clogged. | Ensure water is filled to the safety valve. Use medium-fine grounds, do not tamp. Increase heat. Check safety valve for obstructions. |
| Steam leaks from the joint. | Upper and lower chambers not screwed tightly; worn gasket or filter plate. | Ensure chambers are screwed together firmly. Inspect and replace gasket/filter plate if damaged. |
| Coffee tastes burnt or bitter. | Heat too high; coffee left on heat too long after brewing; old coffee grounds. | Use medium heat. Remove from heat immediately after brewing. Use fresh coffee grounds. |
| Water leaks from the safety valve. | Overfilled water chamber. | Do not fill water above the safety valve level. |
